Madeleine Bates

Also known as Madeleine Ashcraft Bates, Madeline Bates

Madeleine Bates was a computational linguist whose career linked BBN's artificial-intelligence research with spoken-language and natural-language systems. She graduated in mathematics from Carnegie Mellon in 1968 and earned a PhD in applied mathematics at Harvard in 1975, where she worked with Bill Woods on augmented transition networks. At BBN, she wrote about its AI research and coauthored work on the Delphi system, the ATIS-3 corpus and BBN VALAD; she also served as ACL president and co-edited Challenges in Natural Language Processing. Her 1995 paper, ‘Models of natural language understanding,’ appeared in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, and her BBN career continued through the late 1990s.

Timeline

  1. 1968–1975

Mathematics at Carnegie Mellon and Harvard

She studies at Allegheny College before transferring to Carnegie Mellon University, where she majors in mathematics and graduates in 1968. At Harvard, she earns a PhD in applied mathematics in 1975 and works with Bill Woods on augmented transition networks.

  2. 1971–1982

    Early work at BBN

While a Harvard student, she starts part-time work at BBN in 1971. After her PhD, she teaches at Boston University as an assistant professor for three years, then becomes a full-time BBN researcher; in 1982, she publishes ‘AI Research at Bolt, Beranek & Newman, Inc.’ in AI Magazine.

  3. 1984

    Database mining at COLING-ACL

In 1984, she publishes ‘There Still Is Gold in the Database Mine’ in the proceedings of the 10th International Conference on Computational Linguistics and 22nd Annual Meeting of the Association for Computational Linguistics.

  4. 1985

    President of the ACL

She serves as president of the Association for Computational Linguistics in 1985.

  5. 1989–1993

    Challenges and a BBN symposium

A symposium on future directions in natural language processing takes place at BBN in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1989. She and Ralph M. Weischedel co-edit Challenges in Natural Language Processing, published by Cambridge University Press in 1993.

  6. 1993–1994

    ARPA, Delphi and ATIS-3

In 1993, she authors ‘Overview of the ARPA Human Language Technology Workshop.’ In 1994, she coauthors ‘The Delphi Natural Language Understanding System’ and ‘Expanding the Scope of the ATIS Task: The ATIS-3 Corpus.’

  7. 1995

    Models of natural language understanding

In 1995, she publishes ‘Models of natural language understanding’ in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

  8. Late 1990s

BBN VALAD at a logistics desk

In 1997, she coauthors ‘Using BBN VALAD: Speech at the Logistics Anchor Desk.’ She continues her work at BBN through the late 1990s.
