Madan M. Gupta

Also known as Madan Gupta

Madan M. Gupta was an engineering professor at the University of Saskatchewan whose research combined fuzzy logic, neural networks and control systems. With a BE from the Birla Institute of Technology and Science and a PhD from the University of Warwick, he served at Saskatchewan from 1967 to 2003 and founded and directed its Intelligent Systems Research Laboratory. In 1998, he received the second Kaufmann Prize Gold Medal for fuzzy-logic research, and in 1999 he published a fuzzy neural models paper with Petr Musilek and the book Soft Computing and Intelligent Systems. In 2003, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Fifth Biannual World Automation Congress and Wiley published Static and Dynamic Neural Networks, which he wrote with Liang Jin and Noriyasu Homma; he died in 2021 in Saskatoon.

  1. 1967–2003

    Professor at Saskatchewan

    He holds a BE from the Birla Institute of Technology and Science in Pilani and a PhD from the University of Warwick. From 1967 to 2003, he serves in the College of Engineering at the University of Saskatchewan and becomes Professor Emeritus of Mechanical Engineering. Before retiring, he is elected a Life Fellow of the IEEE and a Fellow of both the International Society for Optical Engineering and the International Fuzzy Systems Association.

    A Kelvin Premium

    In 1991, he is a co-recipient of the Institution of Electrical Engineers Kelvin Premium.

  3. 1998

    A fuzzy logic gold medal

    In 1998, he receives the second Kaufmann Prize Gold Medal for his research in fuzzy logic. The prize is presented in Reus, Spain, by the Foundation for the Study of Fuzzy Management and the International Association for Fuzzy Set Management and Economy.

  4. 1999

    A fuzzy neural models paper

    In 1999, he and Petr Musilek publish "Fuzzy Neural Models Based on Some New Fuzzy* Arithmetic Operations" in the Journal of Advanced Computational Intelligence and Intelligent Informatics, from the Intelligent Systems Research Laboratory at Saskatchewan. The paper develops alternative fuzzy arithmetic operations and treats neural inputs and weights as interactive variables to control uncertainty growth in neural processing.

  5. 1999

    Soft Computing and Intelligent Systems

    He is the author of Soft Computing and Intelligent Systems, which Academic Press publishes in October 1999 with Naresh K. Sinha as editor. The book covers the fundamentals of soft computing, including fuzzy engineering and genetic algorithms, along with applications and case studies.

    Static and Dynamic Neural Networks

    In April 2003, Wiley publishes Static and Dynamic Neural Networks: From Fundamentals to Advanced Theory, which he writes with Liang Jin and Noriyasu Homma. The 752-page book describes the theoretical underpinnings of neural networks and illustrates the theory with practical examples.

    A Lifetime Achievement Award

    In 2003, he receives a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Fifth Biannual World Automation Congress for outstanding contributions to the fields of neural networks and their applications.

  8. 2021

    Death in Saskatoon

    In 2021, Stanford University recognizes him among the top 1% of researchers in the world based on his publications. He dies in November 2021 in Saskatoon, as a distinguished research chair and founder and director of the Intelligent Systems Research Laboratory at the University of Saskatchewan.
