Fausto Giunchiglia
Fausto Giunchiglia is a computer scientist whose AI work formalizes reasoning across contexts and connects meanings across data. He helped formalize contextual reasoning with Local Models Semantics, led the first phase of the NuSMV model checker, and co-developed S-Match for semantic matching. His later work applies context to personal data: Big-Thick Data joins a user's view of the world with a reference view. He chaired IJCAI-05 and served as president of its Board of Trustees; he was elected to Academia Europaea in 2012 and received the 2024 Chinese Government Friendship Award. As of October 2026, he is a professor at the University of Trento, a distinguished professor at ZCST, and executive director of the International Joint Laboratory for Artificial Intelligence and Social Applications.
Timeline
-
1981–1999
From Genoa to Trento
He earned a Laurea in Electronic Engineering in 1981, a computer science master’s in 1983, and a PhD in Computer Engineering in 1987 at the University of Genoa. He also held a visiting fellowship at Stanford and joined the University of Trento as an associate professor in 1992, becoming a full professor in 1999.
-
1998
Making context computable
In his 1998 Local Models Semantics work, he gives contextual reasoning a formal foundation. It treats reasoning as local to relevant knowledge and inference procedures, with compatibility between contexts.
-
1999
Opening symbolic model checking
At CAV'99, he and colleagues present NuSMV as a symbolic model verifier. He starts and leads the first phase of its implementation.
-
2005–2007
Matching meanings, leading IJCAI
With Pavel Shvaiko and Mikalai Yatskevich, he presents S-Match, an algorithm and implementation for finding semantic correspondences between nodes in graph-like structures. He chairs IJCAI-05, serves as president of its Board of Trustees from 2005 to 2007, and holds a trustee term from 2001 to 2011.
-
2012
Joining Academia Europaea
He is elected to Academia Europaea's Informatics section.
-
2024
Contextual data, public recognition
With Xiaoyue Li, he introduces Big-Thick Data, a data encoding that joins each user's personal view of the world with an objective reference context. In 2024, he receives the Chinese Government Friendship Award.
-
March 2025
A professorship in Zhuhai
In March 2025, he is appointed a distinguished professor at Zhuhai College of Science and Technology (ZCST).
-
As of October 2026
Leading a joint AI lab
He is a professor at the University of Trento, a distinguished professor at ZCST, and executive director of the International Joint Laboratory for Artificial Intelligence and Social Applications.
