Leonid Sigal
Leonid Sigal is a computer vision researcher whose work spans human pose estimation, visual understanding and video reasoning. He studied computer science and mathematics at Boston University and computer science at Brown, built industrial vision applications at Cognex, and later held research roles at the University of Toronto, Disney Research and Carnegie Mellon. A 2006 paper with Michael Black estimated 3D human pose from a single image, and his 2025 CVPR paper “Black Swan” focused on abductive and defeasible reasoning in unexpected video events. Since 2017, he has worked on visual and multimodal understanding at UBC, and he received a Killam Accelerator Research Fellowship in 2021. As of October 2026, he is Associate Head of Faculty Affairs and Professor at UBC and a Canada CIFAR Artificial Intelligence Chair at the Vector Institute.
Timeline
-
1999–2003
Boston degrees and industrial vision
At Boston University, he earns degrees in computer science and mathematics and an MA in computer science in 1999; he earns an MS in computer science at Brown in 2003. From 1999 to 2001, he works as a senior vision engineer at Cognex, building industrial vision applications for pattern analysis and verification.
-
2006
A 3D pose paper
With Michael Black, he coauthors “Predicting 3D People from 2D Pictures,” which wins the Best Paper Award at the Articulated Motion and Deformable Objects Conference in 2006. Their hierarchical probabilistic framework estimates a person's 3D pose from a single image.
-
2007–2017
Toronto, Disney and Carnegie Mellon
He completes a PhD in computer science at Brown in 2008 and holds a postdoctoral researcher role in the University of Toronto's Department of Computer Science from 2007 to 2009. At Disney Research, he works as a postdoctoral associate from 2009 to 2010, a research scientist from 2010 to 2013 and a senior research scientist from 2014 to 2017; he also serves as adjunct faculty in Carnegie Mellon's Robotics Institute from 2012 to 2017.
-
Since 2017
Professor at UBC
In 2017, he joins UBC's Department of Computer Science as an Associate Professor. His work spans computer vision, machine learning and computer graphics, including visual and multimodal understanding, reasoning and generation.
-
2018–2023
A Canada Research Chair
From 2018 to 2023, he holds an NSERC Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in computer vision and machine learning. In 2021, he receives the UBC Killam Accelerator Research Fellowship.
-
2025
Black Swan at CVPR
At CVPR in 2025, he coauthors “Black Swan: Abductive and Defeasible Video Reasoning in Unexpected Events.”
-
As of October 2026
Associate Head at UBC
As of October 2026, he is Associate Head of Faculty Affairs and Professor in UBC's Department of Computer Science. He also holds a Canada CIFAR Artificial Intelligence Chair at the Vector Institute.
