Latafat Gardashova

Also known as Lətafət Qardaşova, Qardaşova Lətafət Abbas qızı

Latafat Gardashova is an Azerbaijani computer scientist who works on fuzzy logic, Z-numbers and artificial intelligence for decision making and control. After studying applied mathematics at Baku State University and working as an engineer-programmer at the Institute of Cybernetics, she joined Azerbaijan State Oil and Industry University (ASOIU) in 1992. Her 2014 doctor of sciences dissertation treated decision-making systems for an oil refinery enterprise under fuzzy conditions, and her later work included a 2016 Z-number project with the University of California, Berkeley, a Z-number TOPSIS method and a fuzzy expert system for rectal cancer. A presidential decree made her an Honored Scientist of Azerbaijan in 2020, and she became ASOIU's vice-rector for scientific affairs in June 2021. She is a professor in the university's Department of Computer Engineering and supervises doctoral students in fuzzy logic, systems analysis and artificial intelligence.

  1. 1966–1992

    Programming at the Institute of Cybernetics

    Born in Zaqatala, in Soviet Azerbaijan, in 1966, she studies applied mathematics at Baku State University. From 1990 to 1992, she works as an engineer-programmer in the Special Designer Bureau of the Institute of Cybernetics of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS).

  2. 1992–2010

    A research post at ASOIU

    She joins Azerbaijan State Oil and Industry University (ASOIU) in 1992 as a research worker. With R. A. Aliev and colleagues, she coauthors the Russian-language book Principles of Decision Making and Control under Uncertainty in 1999, and in 2010 she publishes the monograph Decision-Making Methods in the Fuzzy Environment.

  3. 2014

    A doctorate in fuzzy decision making

    In 2014, she defends a doctor of sciences dissertation on decision-making management systems for an oil refinery enterprise under a fuzzy environment and receives the degree of Doctor of Technical Sciences. Her 2014 paper in Applied Mathematics applies operational approaches to decision-making problems described with Z-numbers.

  4. 2016–2019

    Z-numbers with Berkeley

    She takes part in a 2016 joint project of ASOIU and the University of California, Berkeley on Z-numbers and their application. In 2018, she publishes a Z-number based TOPSIS method for multi-criteria decision making and, with Y. Aliyarov and Sh. Ahmadov, a fuzzy expert system for rectal cancer. With Vugar E. Mirzakhanov, she modifies the Wu-Mendel approach to linguistic summarization using IF-THEN rules in a 2019 paper in the Journal of Experimental & Theoretical Artificial Intelligence.

  5. 2017–2020

    Honored Scientist of Azerbaijan

    In October 2017, the Science Development Fund under the President of Azerbaijan awards her its "Scientist of 2016" medal. She receives the 100th anniversary medal of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic by presidential decree in May 2019. A presidential decree of December 2020, marking ASOIU's 100th anniversary, gives her the honorary title Honored Scientist of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

  6. 2021–2023

    Vice-rector for scientific affairs

    In June 2021, she becomes ASOIU's vice-rector for scientific affairs. In 2023, she receives the academic title of professor and publishes two English-language books, Knowledge Engineering and the monograph Fuzzy Logic and Its Application.

  7. September 2025

    Research teacher status

    In September 2025, ASOIU awards its new "research teacher" status for the first time, choosing scientists by their Scopus publications and H-index, and she is among those selected. She supervises doctoral students in fuzzy logic, systems analysis and artificial intelligence.

  8. As of October 2026

    Professor of computer engineering

    She is a professor in ASOIU's Department of Computer Engineering. In April 2026, the university announces her seminar on extending fuzzy implication, which covers Z-numbers, Z-implication models and approximate reasoning based on Z-rules.
