Kyungtae Lim

Also known as KyungTae Lim, 임경태

Kyungtae Lim is a natural language processing researcher whose work runs from multilingual dependency parsing to open Korean–English language models. After a stint at Samsung SDS and master's study at KAIST, he pursued a Ph.D. at École normale supérieure in Paris from 2017 to 2020 under Thierry Poibeau, and the SEx BiST parser he coauthored placed 2nd of 26 teams on UAS at the CoNLL 2018 shared task. In 2024 he coauthored a paper that introduced Bllossom, a Korean-focused model built on Llama2, and in 2025 he coauthored KORMo-10B, a 10.8B-parameter bilingual model trained from scratch. He is an assistant professor at KAIST's Graduate School of Culture Technology, where he heads the Multimodal Language Processing Lab.

Timeline

  1. 2004–2014

Samsung SDS and a KAIST master's

He studies computer science at Dankook University from 2004 to 2010 and works as an engineer at Samsung SDS from 2010 to 2012. From 2012 to 2014 he studies web science and technology at KAIST for an M.S., with Key-Sun Choi as advisor.

  2. 2014–2020

    KISTI and a Paris doctorate

He works as a researcher at the Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information from 2014 to 2016. From 2017 to 2020 he studies language sciences for a Ph.D. at École normale supérieure – PSL in Paris, advised by Thierry Poibeau of the LATTICE laboratory, and his doctoral work covers multilingual dependency parsing and natural language understanding.

  3. 2018

    The SEx BiST parser

In 2018 he coauthors a LREC paper with Niko Partanen and Thierry Poibeau on multilingual dependency parsing for North Saami and Komi-Zyrian, two low-resource languages. The SEx BiST parser he coauthors at Lattice for the CoNLL 2018 shared task places 4th of 26 teams on LAS and 2nd of 26 on UAS, and ranks 1st at the event extraction task of the 2018 Extrinsic Parser Evaluation campaign.

  4. 2020–2025

    From KAERI to two professorships

From 2020 to 2021 he is a senior researcher at the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute. He becomes an assistant professor of computer engineering at Hanbat National University in 2021, and from 2023 until February 2025 he is an assistant professor of applied artificial intelligence at Seoul National University of Science and Technology.

  5. 2022

    A morpheme-based Korean format

In 2022 he coauthors the COLING paper "Yet Another Format of Universal Dependencies for Korean", which proposes a morpheme-based scheme for Korean dependency parsing. The proposed morphUD format outperforms parsing results for all Korean UD treebanks.

  6. 2024

    The Bllossom language model

In 2024 he coauthors a paper that adapts Llama2 to Korean by expanding the vocabulary, pretraining on bilingual data and tuning on a small instruction dataset, and names the resulting model Bllossom.

  7. Since 2025

    Heading KAIST's MLP Lab

In March 2025 he joins the Graduate School of Culture Technology at KAIST as an assistant professor, where he heads the Multimodal Language Processing Lab and is also an adjunct professor in the AX Department. His research areas are multimodal language models, agents and natural language processing. In October 2025 he is a coauthor of KORMo-10B, a 10.8B-parameter model trained from scratch on a Korean–English corpus and released with its data, code, training recipes and logs.
