Kurt Hornik
Kurt Hornik is a statistician whose work spans neural-network theory, recursive partitioning, and open-source software. In 1989, he coauthored “Multilayer feedforward networks are universal approximators” with Maxwell Stinchcombe and Halbert White. He helped develop R with colleagues in the early 1990s, helped set up CRAN with Friedrich Leisch at TU Wien, and coauthored a conditional-inference framework for tree models. He joined WU as a professor in 2004 and received Austria's Golden Merit Decoration in 2007; in June 2026, he was named a Rousseeuw Prize recipient with international colleagues. As of October 2026, he chairs WU's Department of Finance, Accounting and Statistics.
Timeline
-
1987–1990
Technical mathematics at TU Wien
He studies Technical Mathematics at TU Wien and completes a doctorate in 1987. At TU Wien, he becomes an assistant professor in 1988 and an associate professor in 1990.
-
1989
Universal approximation in neural networks
In 1989, he coauthors “Multilayer feedforward networks are universal approximators” with Maxwell Stinchcombe and Halbert White.
-
1990s
R and its package archive
In the early 1990s, he begins developing R with colleagues. With Friedrich Leisch, he helps set up CRAN at TU Wien to distribute R and its contributed extensions. By mid-1997, he is a member of the R Core Team with write access to R's source code.
-
2004
Professor at WU Vienna
In 2004, he joins WU as Professor of Statistics and Mathematics. From 2004, he leads the Institute for Statistics and Mathematics and the Research Institute for Computational Methods.
-
2006
Conditional inference trees
In 2006, he coauthors “Unbiased Recursive Partitioning: A Conditional Inference Framework” with Torsten Hothorn and Achim Zeileis. The R party package lists Hornik as an author and implements ctree, a conditional-inference tree method for regression.
-
2007
A national merit award
In 2007, he receives the Golden Merit Decoration (Goldenes Verdienstzeichen) for services to the Republic of Austria.
-
2026
A Rousseeuw Prize
In June 2026, WU announces Hornik and his international colleagues as recipients of the Rousseeuw Prize for Statistics for their work on R. The prize recognizes R's role as a data-analysis tool.
-
As of October 2026
Department chair at WU
As of October 2026, he is a professor at WU's Institute for Statistics and Mathematics, belongs to the Competence Center for Applied AI & Scientific Computing, and chairs the Department of Finance, Accounting and Statistics.
