Kumpati S. Narendra
Kumpati Narendra is a Yale professor emeritus whose research explored artificial neural networks for identifying and controlling nonlinear dynamical systems. He came to the United States from India in 1954 after earning an electrical engineering degree with honors at the University of Madras, earned applied physics graduate degrees at Harvard in 1955 and 1959, and held Harvard posts before joining Yale in 1965. At Yale, he founded the Center for Systems Science in 1981, studied neural networks from 1988, and developed adaptive control with multiple models in the 1990s. He coauthored a 2004 paper on neural-network system identification and control, received the Bellman Control Heritage Award in 2003, and received the Neural Network Pioneer Award/Medal of the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society in 2008. As of October 2026, he is professor emeritus of electrical and computer engineering at Yale.
