Researcher

Kumiko Tanaka-Ishii

Kumiko Tanaka-Ishii is a computational linguist whose research connects mathematical models of language with natural language processing and AI. She studied mathematical engineering and functional programming at the University of Tokyo, completed a doctorate in natural language processing, and held research and faculty posts at the Agency of Industrial Science and Technology, the University of Tokyo, and Kyushu University. Her books examine programming as a sign system and natural language as a complex system, while her recent papers use statistical structure to compare language models with human-written text. She is a professor in Waseda's School of Fundamental Science and Engineering, where her work combines large language models and machine learning with methods from statistical mechanics.

Timeline

  1. 1987–1997

Degrees at the University of Tokyo

She studies mathematical engineering and information physics at the University of Tokyo from 1987 to 1991, earns an M.E. in functional programming language in 1993, and completes a Ph.D. in natural language processing in 1997. From 1994 to 1995, she is a visiting researcher at LIMSI-CNRS.

  2. 1997–2003

    Senior lecturer at Tokyo

She works at the Agency of Industrial Science and Technology from 1997 to 2000, then joins the University of Tokyo's Graduate School of Interdisciplinary Information Studies as a senior lecturer in 2000. In 2003, she coauthors the ACL paper Acquiring vocabulary for predictive text entry through dynamic reuse of a small user corpus.

  3. 2003–2012

    Developing language-processing software

She is an associate professor at the University of Tokyo's Information Technology Center from 2003 to 2005, then at its Graduate School of Information Science and Technology until 2012. Her lab develops language technology from mathematical models of natural language and semiotic systems.

  4. 2008

    A Young Scientists' Prize

She receives the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology's Young Scientists' Prize in 2008.

  5. 2010–2011

    Semiotics of Programming

Her 2010 book Semiotics of Programming applies theories of signs to computer programming. It wins the Suntory Academic Award in Philosophy and History in 2010 and the Okawa Book Award in 2011.

  6. 2012–2023

    Professorships at Kyushu and Tokyo

She becomes a professor at Kyushu University in April 2012, then joins the University of Tokyo's RCAST as a professor in April 2016. She remains at RCAST until March 2023.

  7. 2021

    Statistical Universals of Language

Her 2021 book Statistical Universals of Language proposes natural language as a complex system and examines properties such as Zipf's law and long-range correlation. The book wins The Mainichi Publishing Culture Award in November 2021.

  8. 2025–2026

    Professor at Waseda

She is a professor in Waseda's Department of Computer Science and Engineering, School of Fundamental Science and Engineering, a post she begins in April 2023. From 2025, she also serves on the review committees for AAAI, NeurIPS, and ICML, and her research combines large language models and machine learning with analytical tools from statistical mechanics. In 2025, she coauthors Correlation dimension of autoregressive large language models at NeurIPS; in 2026, her ACL paper uses repeated subsequences to identify structural differences between GPT-generated and human-written text.
