Krzysztof Jassem

Krzysztof Jassem is a computer scientist and AI researcher at Adam Mickiewicz University, where his work includes natural-language processing, machine translation, and Polish language models. He studied mathematics there, joined its staff in 1990, and founded Poleng, which began work on Translatica. His language-technology work includes projects with Samsung and the 2013 PSI-Toolkit, as well as a 2019 monograph on historical Polish texts. He coauthors a 2025 benchmark for Polish language models and 2026 research on retrieval-augmented generation. As of October 2026, he is a professor and director of the university's Center for Artificial Intelligence; he received a Ministry of Science award for implementation work in the 2025 award cycle, presented during Polish Science Day in 2026.

  1. 1983–2008

    Mathematics and a doctorate

    He studies mathematics at Adam Mickiewicz University from 1983 to 1988 and joins its staff in 1990. In 1997, he earns a doctorate at the Polish Academy of Sciences' Institute of Computer Science under Michał Kleiber; in 2008, he completes his habilitation there.

  2. 2003–2013

    Poleng and a 2006 award

    He founds Poleng in 2003 and serves as its board president from 2003 to 2013. The company begins work on Translatica in 2003, and he receives the Professor Pawlak Best Paper Award in 2006.

  3. 2010–2017

    Leading the Information Systems Lab

    In 2010, he becomes head of the Information Systems Laboratory at Adam Mickiewicz University. The lab becomes the Department of Natural Language Processing in 2017.

  4. 2012–2020

    Machine translation with Samsung

    The department's Machine Translation Modules pilot with Samsung runs from October 2012 to February 2013. From 2015 through 2020, Jassem leads annual natural-language-processing projects with Samsung that involve staff and graduate students.

  5. 2013–2019

    PSI-Toolkit and Polish text tools

    In 2013, he coauthors a paper on PSI-Toolkit, a natural-language processing pipeline. In 2019, he publishes a monograph on computer tools for diachronic normalization of Polish texts.

  6. 2025–2026

    Polish LLMs and an AI spin-off

    In 2025, he coauthors LLMzSzŁ, a benchmark built from Polish national exams. In October 2025, he presents AMUai's idea for an AI spin-off at Poznań CityLab. In 2026, he coauthors a study that evaluates two Polish language models in a real-world retrieval-augmented system and a paper that presents a multilingual pipeline for citation-grounded reports.

  7. 2025–2026

    A Minister of Science award

    He receives a Ministry of Science award for significant implementation achievements in the 2025 award cycle. The 2026 Polish Science Day ceremony recognizes him among the recipients.

    He is a professor in the Department of Artificial Intelligence and the university's Center for Artificial Intelligence, and director of the center. His research focuses on natural-language processing, machine translation, and language models, especially for Polish.
