Kostyantyn Kechedzhi
Kostyantyn Kechedzhi is a physicist at Google Quantum AI who works on what superconducting quantum processors can compute beyond classical machines. He began with graphene transport theory, publishing on weak localization in monolayer and bilayer graphene in 2009 with Vladimir Fal'ko and others, and wrote on quantum annealing with Vadim Smelyanskiy in 2016. His coauthored work includes the 2018 Science blueprint for quantum supremacy, the 2019 Nature paper on the Sycamore processor and a 2021 Nature paper on a discrete time crystal. In October 2025, he and Xiao Mi described the Quantum Echoes experiment on the Willow processor, which measures out-of-time-order correlators. He is a research scientist at Google Quantum AI.

Timeline
-
2009
Weak localization in graphene
He coauthors "Weak localization in monolayer and bilayer graphene" in 2009 with Vladimir I. Fal'ko, B. L. Altshuler and colleagues, published in European Physical Journal Special Topics.
-
2013–2014
Graphene plasmons and quantum Hall
In 2013, he and S. Das Sarma publish "Plasmon anomaly in the dynamical optical conductivity of graphene". In 2014, he coauthors a paper with Sriram Ganeshan and Das Sarma on critical integer quantum Hall topology and the integrable Maryland model.
-
2016
Open-system quantum annealing
In 2016, he and Vadim N. Smelyanskiy publish "Open-System Quantum Annealing in Mean-Field Models with Exponential Degeneracy".
-
2018
A quantum supremacy blueprint
He is a coauthor of "A blueprint for demonstrating quantum supremacy with superconducting qubits" in Science in 2018, with Sergio Boixo, Hartmut Neven, J. M. Martinis and colleagues. In 2018, he also coauthors "Quantum algorithms to simulate many-body physics of correlated fermions" with Zhang Jiang, Kevin J. Sung, Vadim N. Smelyanskiy and Sergio Boixo.
-
2019
Sycamore and quantum supremacy
He is among the Google AI Quantum authors of the 2019 Nature paper "Quantum supremacy using a programmable superconducting processor". The Sycamore processor creates states on 53 qubits and samples a quantum circuit in about 200 seconds, a task estimated at 10,000 years for a classical supercomputer.
-
2021
A discrete time crystal
He coauthors "Time-crystalline eigenstate order on a quantum processor" in Nature in 2021, with a Google Research affiliation. The team uses controlled-phase gates on an array of superconducting qubits to observe a many-body-localized discrete time crystal.

October 2025
Quantum Echoes on Willow
In October 2025, he and Xiao Mi, research scientists at Google Quantum AI, present Quantum Echoes, a Nature experiment on the Willow processor that measures out-of-time-order correlators and demonstrates a verifiable quantum advantage. Some of its 65-qubit data points are estimated to need 3.2 years each to simulate on the Frontier supercomputer.
