Jarrod Millman

Also known as KJ Millman, K. Jarrod Millman

Jarrod Millman is an open-source scientific Python developer whose 2020 NumPy paper links machine learning and AI growth to Python’s scientific use. He planned a Python neuroimaging package with Matthew Brett, announced NumPy 1.1.0, managed releases for SciPy, and served on NumFOCUS’s founding board and as its president in 2012. At Berkeley, he studied biostatistics and coauthored a 2018 paper on reproducible neuroimaging. As of October 2026, he is Executive Director of UC Berkeley’s Open Source Program Office and a Senior Open Source Scientific Python Developer at BIDS.

Timeline

  1. 2004–2008

    A Python neuroimaging package

In 2004, he and Matthew Brett plan a Python neuroimaging analysis package. The team merges its efforts with Jonathan Taylor. In May 2008, he announces NumPy 1.1.0 as the fundamental package for scientific computing with Python.

  2. 2012

    NumFOCUS president

In 2012, he is NumFOCUS president and a board member. The foundation’s history names him as SciPy release manager and a founding board member.

  3. By 2017

    Cornell and Berkeley training

By 2017, he is a biostatistics PhD student at UC Berkeley and holds a BA in mathematics and computer science from Cornell University. In Spring 2017, he visits the Simons Institute’s Pseudorandomness program as a visiting graduate student.

  4. 2018–2020

    Reproducible research and NumPy

In 2018, he coauthors “Teaching Computational Reproducibility for Neuroimaging” with Matthew Brett, Ross Barnowski, and Jean-Baptiste Poline. In 2020, he coauthors “Array programming with NumPy,” whose authors describe data science, machine learning, and AI growth as drivers of Python’s scientific use.

  5. April 2024

    Opening Berkeley’s OSPO

In April 2024, BIDS establishes UC Berkeley’s Open Source Program Office under his leadership as executive director.

  6. April 2025

    A UC Open source panel

On April 24, 2025, he joins the UC Open panel “Understanding What Is Meant by Open.”

  7. April 2026

    A discussion of NSF POSE

In April 2026, he opens a UC Summit discussion of the NSF POSE program, noting that open-source projects need more than grants for new features.

  8. As of October 2026

    Executive Director at Berkeley

As of October 2026, he is Executive Director of UC Berkeley’s Open Source Program Office and a Senior Open Source Scientific Python Developer at BIDS.
