Researcher

Jaroslaw Cwiklik

Jaroslaw Cwiklik's work spans AI and distributed software, from Apache UIMA and IBM Watson to fault-tolerant cloud systems. He submitted UIMA-AS patches in 2008 and joined the initial membership of the Apache UIMA Project in 2010. He also worked with IBM's team on Watson and its DeepQA architecture in 2010; the team received AAAI's Feigenbaum Prize in 2013. He was named on a patent for distributed UIMA cluster computing in 2016 and reported a UIMA-AS logging and exception-handling defect. The Apache Software Foundation elected him as a member in 2017, and he coauthored a paper on fault-tolerant cloud actors while affiliated with IBM in 2023.

Timeline

  1. 2008

    UIMA-AS FindBugs patches

He submits patches for UIMA-AS problems that FindBugs reports in 2008.

  2. 2010

    Initial Apache UIMA membership

The board appoints him as one of the initial members of the Apache UIMA Project in 2010.

  3. 2010

    IBM's Watson DeepQA team

He is part of IBM's team of researchers and engineers responsible for work on Watson and the DeepQA architecture in 2010.

  4. 2013

    AAAI Feigenbaum Prize

The IBM Watson team that includes him receives AAAI’s Feigenbaum Prize in 2013 for showing that a synthesis of symbolic knowledge representation, natural language understanding, and statistical machine learning can achieve human-level performance in real-time factual question-answering.

  5. 2016

    A distributed UIMA patent

The 2016 patent names him as an inventor of the Distributed UIMA Cluster Computing facility.

  6. 2016

    UIMA-AS logging defect

He reports a UIMA-AS defect in 2016: the dd2spring converter should log misconfiguration exceptions at INFO and rethrow them. The issue closes as fixed in October 2016.

  7. 2017

    Apache Foundation membership

The Apache Software Foundation elects him as one of its new members in 2017.

  8. 2023

    Retry orchestration for cloud actors

He coauthors Reliable Actors with Retry Orchestration in 2023, a paper that proposes a fault-tolerant cloud programming model based on actors, retry orchestration, and tail calls. He is affiliated with IBM when the paper appears in 2023.
