Kishalay Mitra
Kishalay Mitra is a professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering and an associated faculty member in Artificial Intelligence and Climate Change at IIT Hyderabad, where he develops machine learning and optimization tools for manufacturing processes and wind energy. He earned chemical engineering degrees at NIT Durgapur in 1995, IIT Kanpur in 1997 and IIT Bombay in 2009, and spent nearly 15 years in engineering leadership roles at GE Global Research and Tata Research Development & Design Centre. After visiting professorships at the University of Washington and Washington University in St. Louis between 2013 and 2017, he headed IIT Hyderabad's chemical engineering department from 2020 to 2023 while publishing on deep-learning system identification for grinding circuits and neural architecture search for hot rolling and wind forecasting. With Richard Everson and Jonathan Fieldsend, he coedited a 2025 volume on machine learning in wind energy conversion systems, received Indian patents on hot-rolled steel design in 2024 and semi-batch bioreactors in 2026, and joined the 2026 Stanford Top 2% Scientists list.
Timeline

Chemical engineering degrees
He earns a B.E. in Chemical Engineering at the National Institute of Technology Durgapur in 1995 and begins research around 1995 on applying evolutionary multi-objective optimization to a Nylon 6 polymerization reactor. He receives an M.Tech. in Chemical Engineering at IIT Kanpur in 1997 and completes a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering at IIT Bombay in 2009 with the thesis “Dynamic analysis and optimization of uncertain supply chain systems.”
-
2013–2019
Visiting professorships and IBM partnership
In July 2013, he joins the M.A.P.L.E. research group at the University of Washington as a visiting professor from IIT Hyderabad, followed by visiting professorships at Washington University in St. Louis from May 2014 to July 2014 and at the University of Washington in Seattle from April 2017 to July 2017. In 2019, he becomes an associate editor of the Springer journal Journal of The Institution of Engineers (India): Series E and an academic partner of IBM Research India under its Open Science Collaboration Program.
-
2020
Department head and grinding circuits
With M. S. Soumitri, he coauthors “Deep Learning based System Identification of Industrial Integrated Grinding Circuits” in Powder Technology in 2020. From 2020 to 2023, he serves as head of the Department of Chemical Engineering at IIT Hyderabad.
-
2022
Neural search in hot rolling
Collaborating with M. S. Soumitri and I. Mohanti in 2022, he coauthors the chapter “Performance improvement in hot rolling process with novel Neural Architectural search” in the Springer book Machine Learning in Industry. He also receives the IIT Hyderabad Research Excellence Award in 2022.
-
2023–2024
Wind forecasting and steel patent
His 2023 paper “Better Wind forecasting using Evolutionary Neural Architecture Search driven Green Deep Learning” appears in Expert Systems With Applications. In January 2024, he and his co-inventors receive Indian Patent No. 503430 for a system and method to determine the optimum design of hot-rolled steel products.
-
2025
A wind energy AI book
In January 2025, he edits Optimization, Uncertainty and Machine Learning in Wind Energy Conversion Systems with Richard Everson and Jonathan Fieldsend for Springer Nature. That 2025 research also includes a Physics of Fluids study with U. D. Tiwari and N. S. Ghaisas using large eddy simulations to evaluate how yaw misalignment and wind farm column misalignment affect wake losses.
-
2026
Bioreactor patent and Stanford list
In June 2026, he and his co-inventors receive Indian Patent No. 593195 for a biocompatible head plate for semi-batch bioreactors. IIT Hyderabad's Chemical Engineering department lists him among scientists featured in the Stanford Top 2% Scientists list for 2026.
