Kirill Müller
Kirill Müller is a data and computer science researcher and software developer whose R tools connect data analysis, graph algorithms and database systems. After completing a thesis on exact shortest paths in graphs at Karlsruhe in 2006 and a civil engineering PhD on population synthesis at ETH Zurich in 2017, he co-founded the Zurich data science consultancy cynkra with Christoph Sax in 2018. Through R Consortium projects, he designed the testable DBI specification, developed the DBItest suite and implemented the RPostgres and RMariaDB database backends. His open-source work also includes coauthoring the mlfit package for iterative proportional fitting in 2021, contributing to dplyr and tibble, and coauthoring a 2026 PLOS One paper on igraph 1.0 for network analysis. As of October 2026, he is Lead Technology at cynkra, runs the R Consortium's DBI top-level project and maintains duckplyr, a DuckDB-backed version of dplyr.

Timeline
-
2006
Shortest-path thesis at Karlsruhe
In 2006, he completes a thesis at Karlsruhe on designing and implementing a hierarchical speed-up technique for computing exact shortest paths in graphs.
-
2016–2017
Building DBI and DBItest
The R Consortium partially accepts his Improving DBI proposal in early 2016, and in December 2016 he designs a testable DBI specification. By May 2017, he takes over DBI maintenance and develops DBItest, a backend-agnostic test suite with human-readable descriptions of expected behavior.
-
2017
Civil engineering doctorate at ETH Zurich
He completes his doctoral dissertation, A Generalized Approach to Population Synthesis, earning a Ph.D. in civil engineering from ETH Zurich in 2017.
-
2018
Extending DBI and co-founding cynkra
In May 2018, he completes the Establishing DBI project by extending the DBI specification and making three open-source database backends, including RPostgres and RMariaDB, compliant with it. With Christoph Sax, he founds cynkra in 2018, a Zurich-based data science consultancy focused on R where he serves as a founder and partner.
-
2021
The mlfit package and DBI maintenance
With Amarin Siripanich, he coauthors mlfit in 2021, an R package for iterative proportional fitting algorithms on nested structures. In December 2021, he publishes Maintaining DBI, 4/4 and maintains DBI as a common application programming interface between R and database management systems.
-
By 2024
R Consortium projects and DuckDB
By 2024, he receives five R Consortium projects to improve database connectivity and performance in R, plus one project to investigate profiling of R and native code. He also serves in April 2024 as maintainer of the duckdb R package and a core contributor to the tidyverse packages dplyr and tibble.
-
2025–2026
Tidyverse duckplyr and igraph 1.0
In 2025, he co-leads a $10,000 R Consortium project with David Schoch and Maëlle Salmon to enhance R igraph with C core innovations, and in June 2025 he and Salmon announce duckplyr 1.1.0 as a dplyr backend powered by DuckDB. His network-analysis work continues in August 2026, when he coauthors the PLOS One paper igraph 1.0 enables fast and robust network analysis across programming languages.
-
As of October 2026
Lead Technology at cynkra
In March 2026, he releases duckplyr 1.2.1 on CRAN as an author and maintainer of the DuckDB-backed version of dplyr. As of October 2026, he is Lead Technology at cynkra, has worked at the boundary between data and computer science for more than 25 years, and runs the R Consortium's DBI top-level project.
