Kian Hsiang Low
Also known as Low Kian Hsiang, Bryan Kian Hsiang Low, Bryan Low
Kian Hsiang Low is a computer scientist whose AI research spans machine learning, robot planning and multi-agent systems. He earned computer science degrees at NUS in 2001 and 2002, then completed a PhD in electrical and computer engineering at Carnegie Mellon in 2009. His research includes cooperative maps for robot motion, information-theoretic path planning and fairness-aware Bayesian optimization. He coauthored Waterfall, a text watermarking framework for LLM data provenance, and shared the 2024 ICML Workshop on AI for Science Best Paper Award. As of October 2026, he is an Associate Professor at NUS, Director of AI Research at AI Singapore and Deputy Director of the NUS AI Institute.

Timeline
-
2001–2002
Computer science degrees
He earns a B.Sc. (Hons.) in computer science from NUS in 2001 and an M.Sc. in computer science from NUS in 2002.
-
2005
Cooperative maps for robots
In 2005, he coauthors an ensemble of cooperative extended Kohonen maps with Wee Kheng Leow and Marcelo H. Ang Jr. for complex robot motion tasks.
-
2009–2013
Planning mobile robot sensing
He completes a PhD in electrical and computer engineering at Carnegie Mellon in 2009. With John M. Dolan and Pradeep Khosla, he presents an information-theoretic method for adaptive path planning in mobile robotic environmental sensing at ICAPS in 2009. An extended version appears on arXiv in 2013 and makes planning complexity independent of map resolution and less sensitive to robot-team size.
-
2016–2018
A World Economic Forum fellowship
From 2016 to 2018, he serves as a Fellow of the World Economic Forum’s Council on the Future of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics.
-
2021
Fair collaborative optimization
In 2021, he coauthors a collaborative Bayesian optimization method with a regret measure that balances fairness and efficiency. He also coauthors trusted-maximizers entropy search, which measures a query’s information gain over a finite set of trusted maximizers.
-
2024
An AI for Science award
In 2024, he shares the Best Paper Award at the ICML Workshop on AI for Science with NUS colleagues.
-
November 2024–March 2025
Waterfall for text provenance
In November 2024, he coauthors Waterfall, a training-free framework for robust text watermarking and LLM data provenance. In March 2025, he leads NUS Computing’s GLOW.AI lab, whose researchers develop data-centric watermarks to protect text sources through LLM paraphrasing.
-
As of October 2026
AI lab leadership
As of October 2026, he is an Associate Professor of Computer Science at NUS, Director of AI Research at AI Singapore and Deputy Director of NUS AI Institute.
