Karl Steinbuch

Karl Steinbuch was a communications engineer and computer scientist whose Lernmatrix became one of the first technically viable self-learning systems for letter recognition. In industry, he was technical director at Standard Elektrik Lorenz from 1948 to 1958 and developed Europe's first fully transistorized computer system in 1956; he coined “Informatik” in 1955 and became a professor in Karlsruhe in 1958. At Karlsruhe, his institute built a Lernmatrix demonstration by 1960, and the system prompted early discussion of artificial intelligence. His public role included work as an SPD futurist during the 1960s and growing sympathy for far-right ideologies in 1968. He joined the SS at 16, was involved in Wehrmacht war crimes, and died in 2005.

Timeline

  1. By 1944

    Wartime service and physics

At 16, he joins the SS; as a Wehrmacht member during the war, he is involved in war crimes. He studies physics at Stuttgart from 1936 and earns a doctorate there in 1944 during front leave.

  2. 1948–1958

    Industrial computing at SEL

A communications engineer and computer scientist, he works as technical director at Standard Elektrik Lorenz in Stuttgart from 1948 to 1958 and develops Europe's first fully transistorized computer system in 1956. During the 1950s, he also develops the Quelle information-processing system and the Lernmatrix, an early neural network.

  3. 1955

    Coining Informatik

He coins the term “Informatik” in 1955.

  4. 1958–1980

    Professor in Karlsruhe

He becomes a professor at the Technical University of Karlsruhe in 1958 and directs its Institute for Message Processing and Transmission until 1980. In 1964, he is a visiting professor at Stanford.

  5. 1960–1969

    The Lernmatrix

By 1960, his Karlsruhe institute builds a demonstration model that associates displayed patterns with selected characters. A 1969 example uses two modules, photocells and 200 relays to learn and recognize five vowels in upper- and lowercase, including letter forms that differ from learned examples. The Lernmatrix is one of the first technically viable self-learning systems, and its development prompts discussion of artificial intelligence at Karlsruhe in the early 1960s.

  6. 1960s–1968

    Politics in the 1960s

In the 1960s, he works as a future planner for the SPD. As university reforms reach Karlsruhe in 1968, he shows growing sympathy for far-right ideologies.

  7. 1966

    Election to Leopoldina

He is elected to the Leopoldina's information-science section in 1966.

  8. 2005

    Death in 2005

    He dies in 2005.
