Karl Iagnemma
Also known as Karl D. Iagnemma
Karl Iagnemma is an American research scientist and writer whose work spans robotics and AI publications, autonomous driving and warehouse automation. After studying mechanical engineering at the University of Michigan and earning a PhD at MIT in 2001, he led MIT’s Robotic Mobility Group and developed rover models such as Artemis. His 2001 story won the Paris Review Discovery Prize; he published the collection On the Nature of Human Romantic Interaction in 2003 and the novel The Expeditions in 2007. He co-founded nuTonomy in 2013, which ran the first public trial of a self-driving car service in Singapore in August 2016, and became founding CEO of Motional, which developed SAE Level 4 vehicles. Since November 2024, he is CEO of Vecna Robotics; he reported that revenue doubled in his first year, and CaseFlow demand had more than doubled year over year by September 2026.
Timeline
-
1972–2001
Engineering at Michigan and MIT
Born in Shelby Township, Michigan, in 1972, he is an American research scientist and writer. He studies mechanical engineering at the University of Michigan and earns a PhD in mechanical engineering at MIT in 2001.
-
2001
Paris Review Discovery Prize
His short story “On the Nature of Human Romantic Interaction” wins the Paris Review Discovery Prize in 2001.
-
2001–2013
MIT’s Robotic Mobility Group
From 2001 to 2013, he leads MIT’s Robotic Mobility Group, researching wheeled mobile robots. In 2004, he publishes the monograph Mobile Robots in Rough Terrain: Estimation, Motion Planning, and Control with Application to Planetary Rovers. In 2007, he and Emilio Frazzoli are part of MIT’s team in DARPA’s Urban Challenge.
-
2003–2007
Stories and a first novel
He publishes the collection On the Nature of Human Romantic Interaction in 2003. In October 2006, NOVA profiles him while he works with an MIT team designing robots for NASA; Brad Pitt options the collection for possible film development. His first novel, The Expeditions, appears in 2007.
-
2013
Artemis for Mars rovers
In 2013, as a principal investigator in MIT’s Laboratory for Manufacturing and Productivity, he and researchers from Washington University in St. Louis and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory develop Artemis, a model that simulates rover mobility across different soils and terrain. He argues that a better understanding of terramechanics, the interaction between vehicles and deformable terrain, might have prevented Spirit from becoming stuck in Martian sand in May 2009.
-
2013–2017
Co-founding nuTonomy
In 2013, he and Emilio Frazzoli launch nuTonomy as an autonomous-car consulting service, which develops into a Singapore driverless-taxi provider with Iagnemma as CEO. In August 2016, it becomes the first company to run a public trial of a self-driving car service in Singapore. Delphi Automotive acquires it in October 2017.
-
2019–September 2024
Founding CEO of Motional
In 2019, Hyundai and Aptiv form a $4 billion autonomous-driving joint venture, and he becomes its founding CEO; by 2024, his MIT publications on robotics and artificial intelligence receive more than 20,000 citations. In March 2020, the venture is established; in August 2020, it takes the name Motional and develops SAE Level 4 vehicles with him as president and CEO. In September 2024, he becomes a senior strategy advisor as CTO Laura Major becomes interim CEO.
-
Since November 2024
CEO of Vecna Robotics
In 2020, he makes an angel investment in Vecna Robotics, a Waltham, Massachusetts, company whose mobile robots handle materials; in November 2024, he becomes its CEO as it closes $14.5 million in new funding. In September 2025, he reports a revenue doubling in his first year as CEO and a major focus on Vecna’s CaseFlow case-picking system. In September 2026, he remains CEO as CaseFlow demand more than doubles year over year after its 2025 launch.
