Junichi Yamagishi

Also known as 山岸順一

Junichi Yamagishi is a professor at Japan's National Institute of Informatics who works on speech information processing and on technical countermeasures against fake media. He earned his doctorate at Tokyo Institute of Technology in 2006, spent 2007 to 2013 as a research fellow at the University of Edinburgh's Centre for Speech Technology Research, and joined NII as an associate professor in 2013. He co-organized the ASVspoof special sessions at Interspeech from 2013 to 2019 and the Voice Conversion Challenge in 2016 and 2018, and in 2019 SSW10 named two of his papers among the best of past Speech Synthesis Workshops. In 2025, he shared the Award for Science and Technology (Research Category) of Japan's Commendation for Science and Technology with Isao Echizen and Noboru Babaguchi. He is a professor in NII's Digital Content and Media Sciences Research Division.

    He co-organizes the ASVspoof special sessions at Interspeech from 2013 to 2019, which cover spoofing and countermeasures for automatic speaker verification. In 2019, he is among the organizers of the ASVspoof 2019 challenge and its database.

    The Voice Conversion Challenge

    He co-organizes the Voice Conversion Challenge at Interspeech 2016 and its second edition at Odyssey 2018. The 2018 edition adds a Spoke task in which participants build voice conversion systems from a non-parallel database.

    Best papers at SSW10

    In 2019, the 10th ISCA Speech Synthesis Workshop (SSW10) honors two of his papers as best papers of past SSW workshops. They are The HMM-based Speech Synthesis System (HTS) Version 2.0 from 2007, written with Heiga Zen and colleagues, and Investigating Very Deep Highway Networks for Parametric Speech Synthesis from 2016, written with Xin Wang and Shinji Takaki.

    Award for Science and Technology

    In 2025, he shares the Award for Science and Technology (Research Category) of Japan's Commendation for Science and Technology with Isao Echizen of NII and Noboru Babaguchi of Fukui University of Technology. A project centered on him contributes a method to protect voice privacy and a large dataset of fake and real voices for an international fake-voice detection competition.

    He is a professor in the Digital Content and Media Sciences Research Division at the National Institute of Informatics, where he continues research on speech information processing and technical countermeasures against fake media. From 2026 to 2028, he is principal investigator of a Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research (A) project on multimedia processing based on broadcast video archives in the age of generative AI data proliferation.
