Kae Nemoto
Also known as K Nemoto, K. NEMOTO, K. Nemoto
Kae Nemoto is a quantum information researcher whose work includes quantum machine learning and quantum computer architectures. She completed a physics PhD at Ochanomizu University and held research posts in Australia and Wales before joining the National Institute of Informatics in 2003. Her work included quantum multiplexing for communication and quantum reservoir models for classification and image recognition. As of October 2026, she is a professor and Center Director at OIST and holds leadership roles at the National Institute of Informatics and the Japanese-French Laboratory for Informatics.

Timeline
-
1997–2003
Research posts in Australia and Wales
She holds a physics PhD from Ochanomizu University. She begins an AIEF research fellowship in the University of Queensland's physics department in March 1997. She serves as a research officer at the University of Wales in Bangor from May 2000 to May 2003.
-
2003–2010
Professor at NII
She joins the National Institute of Informatics as an associate professor in June 2003. She becomes a professor there in April 2010.
-
2020
Quantum multiplexing for networks
In 2020, Nemoto and her team use quantum multiplexing to combine information from two photons into one for long-distance quantum communication.
-
2022
A quantum neural network
With Akitada Sakurai and colleagues, she introduces a resource-efficient quantum neural-network model in 2022. The team applies it to classification and uses scale-free networks to build a large feature space.
-
2022
France's National Order of Merit
The French Republic appoints her to its National Order of Merit in 2022.
-
2025
A MEXT research award
She receives the 2025 MEXT Science and Technology Award in the Research category for her research on quantum computer architecture theory.
-
2025
Boson sampling for image recognition
In a 2025 paper, she and her coauthors use boson sampling for quantum reservoir computing and apply the method to image-classification tasks.
-
As of October 2026
OIST center director
She is a professor and Center Director at OIST. At NII, she is a professor and directs the Global Research Center for Quantum Information Science; she co-directs the Japanese-French Laboratory for Informatics. Her research includes quantum machine learning and quantum computer architectures.
