Junichi Tsujii
Junichi Tsujii researches natural language processing, machine translation and parsing. Tsujii became a professor at Manchester in 1988 and Tokyo in 1995, and he joined Microsoft Research Asia in 2011. His 2005 paper with Yusuke Miyao develops probabilistic disambiguation for wide-coverage HPSG parsing. ACL elected him a Fellow in 2014, also recognizing biological text mining. He led AIST’s AI Research Center in 2018. He published a lifetime-achievement research retrospective in 2021.

Timeline
-
1988–1995
Language research across universities
Tsujii became a professor at Manchester in 1988 and Tokyo in 1995. He also worked at Kyoto earlier. His research career connects computational descriptions of language with the engineering of systems that process it.
-
2005
Shared probabilistic parsing
With Yusuke Miyao, Tsujii published Probabilistic Disambiguation Models for Wide-Coverage HPSG Parsing in 2005. The original paper develops log-linear models to choose among possible grammatical analyses. It uses methods to reduce estimation costs and evaluates parsing on Wall Street Journal treebank material.
-
2011–2014
Research and ACL recognition
Tsujii became a principal researcher at Microsoft Research Asia in 2011. ACL elected him a Fellow in 2014 for contributions to machine translation, unification-based parsing and biological text mining.
-
2018–2021
AI leadership and a research retrospective
Tsujii directed AIST’s AI Research Center in February 2018 and lectured about AI collaborating with people. In 2021 he published Natural Language Processing and Computational Linguistics in the journal’s lifetime-achievement series. The career spans language methods and the institutions that support them.
