Javier Ortega-Garcia

Javier Ortega-Garcia is a telecommunications engineer whose research centers on signal processing and biometric recognition. His research in 2006 covered speaker, face, fingerprint and online-signature recognition, and he coauthored a 2008 paper describing the BioSec multimodal database for automatic speaker recognition. He directed UAM's Escuela Politécnica Superior from 2009 to 2017 and served as vice-rector for Innovation, Transfer and Technology from 2017 to 2021. He became an IAPR Fellow in 2018 for his biometric-recognition contributions and won UAM's 2024 first prize for a proctoring technology project. As of October 2026, he is a professor of Signal Theory and Communications at UAM; Stanford's 2026 World Top 2% Scientists ranking included him for career-long and 2025-year metrics.

    Telecom engineering degrees

    He earns an M.S. in electrical engineering at UPM in 1989 and a PhD in electrical engineering there in 1996.

    Associate professor at UAM

    He becomes an IAPR Fellow for contributions to biometric recognition, including behavioral traits such as speech, handwriting and human-device interactions.

    He wins the first prize in UAM's II Innovation and Knowledge Transfer Awards for the project Tecnologías de Proctoring para la Formación en Competencias Digitales.
