José Ignacio Latorre
Also known as José Ignacio Latorre Sentís, JI Latorre, Jose I. Latorre
José Ignacio Latorre is a theoretical physicist who has applied artificial intelligence to particle physics and now directs a quantum technologies centre. He earned his doctorate at the University of Barcelona in 1985 and became a full professor there. In 2002 he coauthored a paper on neural-network parametrization of proton structure functions, and he was a founder of the NNPDF collaboration, which uses AI on Large Hadron Collider data. He wrote three popular-science books between 2016 and 2019, moved to Abu Dhabi in 2020 to create a quantum computing centre, and in 2021 the Technology Innovation Institute announced a quantum computer under his supervision. He is director of the Centre for Quantum Technologies in Singapore, a post he was named to in May 2020.

Timeline
-
1985
Doctorate at Barcelona
He completes his doctorate in quantum chromodynamics at the University of Barcelona in 1985, with a thesis on QCD sum rules. He then holds a Fulbright fellowship at MIT and a postdoctoral post at the Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen.
-
2002
Neural networks for structure functions
In 2002, he coauthors with Stefano Forte, Lluis Garrido and Andrea Piccione a paper that trains an ensemble of neural networks on Monte Carlo pseudo-data to parametrize the proton and deuteron structure function F_2. He is a founder of the NNPDF collaboration, which uses artificial intelligence to analyze Large Hadron Collider data at CERN.
-
2016–2019
Three popular-science books
He writes three books for general readers: La Nada, o el vacío cuántico in 2016, Cuántica, tu futuro en juego in 2017, and Ética para máquinas in 2019.
-
By 2020
Barcelona professor and Quantic
He is a full professor of theoretical physics at the University of Barcelona and leads the Quantic group at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center, which aims to build a quantum computer. In January 2020, he gives a talk on artificial intelligence and ethics and is the author of Ética para Máquinas.
-
2020
Quantum centres in Abu Dhabi
In early 2020, he leaves his Barcelona chair for Abu Dhabi to create a quantum computing centre. In May 2020, he is named director of the Centre for Quantum Technologies in Singapore.
-
March 2021
A quantum computer at TII
In March 2021, it is announced that the first quantum computer will be developed at the Technology Innovation Institute's Quantum Research Centre under his supervision as chief researcher, with Spain's Qilimanjaro Quantum Tech.
-
November 2025
Helios in Singapore
In November 2025, as director of the Centre for Quantum Technologies, he says that hosting the Helios quantum computer in Singapore gives researchers direct, high-speed access to the machine.
