Mohan Kankanhalli

As of October 2026, Mohan Kankanhalli is Provost's Chair Professor of Computer Science at the National University of Singapore and directs its AI Institute. His research interests are in multimodal computing, computer vision and trustworthy AI. He earned a B.Tech. at IIT Kharagpur in 1986 and a Ph.D. at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1990. He joined NUS as a senior lecturer in 1998, held vice-dean and vice provost posts, and served as Dean of the NUS School of Computing from 2016 to 2022. The NUS AI Institute became operational in March 2024, and in 2024 he was named to the IAPR Fellow Award and the ACM Fellows class.

  1. 1986–1990

    Degrees from IIT and Rensselaer

    He finishes a B.Tech. at IIT Kharagpur in 1986, then an M.S. in 1988 and a Ph.D. in 1990 at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

  2. 1998

    Senior lecturer at NUS

    In 1998 he joins the National University of Singapore as a senior lecturer.

  3. 2001–2010

    Vice-dean at NUS Computing

    From 2001 to 2007 he serves as Vice-Dean for Research at the NUS School of Computing, then as Vice-Dean for Academic Affairs and Graduate Studies from 2008 to 2010.

  4. 2011–2016

    Vice Provost for graduate education

    In 2011 he becomes Associate Provost for Graduate Education, and in 2014 he becomes Vice Provost for Graduate Education.

  5. 2016–2022

    Dean of NUS Computing

    As dean of the NUS School of Computing, he serves from 2016 to 2022.

  6. March 2024

    A new AI institute at NUS

    The newly established NUS AI Institute becomes operational in March 2024, and its director's research interests are in multimodal computing, computer vision and trustworthy AI.

  7. 2024

    IAPR and ACM fellowships

    Selected for the IAPR Fellow Award in 2024, he is also named to the 2024 ACM Fellows class.

  8. As of October 2026

    Provost's Chair Professor at NUS

    He directs the NUS AI Institute and holds the Provost's Chair Professor post in computer science. He also serves as Deputy Executive Chairman (Talent) of AI Singapore.
