Bryan Hooi
Also known as Hooi Bryan
Bryan Hooi is a machine-learning researcher whose graph methods target fraud and anomalies. At Stanford, he earned degrees in mathematics and computer science in 2014, then coauthored FRAUDAR, a graph-fraud system that won KDD's 2016 Best Paper Award. His research spans graph neural networks for time-series anomalies, LUNAR for local outlier detection, and a KDD 2024 paper on fake-news detection under LLM-empowered style attacks. As of October 2026, he is an assistant professor at NUS, where his work includes graph memory for LLM agents.

2021
Graph neural nets for time series
In 2021, Hooi and Ailin Deng publish "Graph Neural Network-Based Anomaly Detection in Multivariate Time Series," which models inter-sensor relationships to detect and explain anomalies.
-
2022
LUNAR for local outliers
In 2022, Hooi and his coauthors introduce LUNAR, a graph neural network that learns from each node's nearest neighbors to find anomalies.
