Luís Moniz Pereira

Also known as Luis Moniz Pereira

Luís Moniz Pereira is a Portuguese computer scientist whose research covers logic programming and machine ethics. He was the founding president of the Portuguese Artificial Intelligence Association in 1983, and he headed the computer science department at Universidade Nova de Lisboa from 1992 to 1996. EurAI made him a Fellow in 2001, and he received Portugal's National Medal of Scientific Merit in 2019. He holds the title of Professor Emeritus at Universidade Nova de Lisboa, granted in 2021. He also sits on the Scientific Council of IMDEA in Madrid.

  1. 1980

    Habilitation in artificial intelligence

    He earns the habilitation, or Agregação, in artificial intelligence at Universidade Nova de Lisboa in 1980.

  2. 1983

    Founding the Portuguese AI association

    In 1983 he becomes the founding president of the Portuguese Artificial Intelligence Association (APPIA).

  3. 1985–2008

    Full professor, then early retirement

    At Universidade Nova de Lisboa, he becomes a full professor of computer science in 1985. Early retirement follows in 2008, at 60.

  4. 1992–1996

    Heading computer science at NOVA

    Between 1992 and 1996 he heads the computer science department at Universidade Nova de Lisboa.

  5. 2001–2022

    EurAI and AAIA fellowships

    He becomes a Fellow of EurAI in 2001. In 2022 he is elected AAIA Fellow of the Asia-Pacific Artificial Intelligence Association.

  6. 2019

    National Medal of Scientific Merit

    The Portuguese prime minister presents him with the National Medal of Scientific Merit in 2019, for his work in artificial intelligence.

  7. Since 2021

    Emeritus professor at NOVA

    The university grants him the title of Professor Emeritus in 2021. His research covers logic programming, computational logic, knowledge representation and reasoning, evolutionary game theory and machine ethics.

  8. Since 2024

    AI researcher and IMDEA council member

    He is currently an AI researcher, a retired full professor who sits on the Scientific Council of IMDEA in Madrid.
