John Henry Clippinger
Also known as John Clippinger
John Henry Clippinger is an American researcher and entrepreneur whose AI work runs from early natural language processing to active inference. After Yale, he did doctoral research at the MIT Artificial Intelligence Laboratory with Terry Winograd from 1972 to 1975 and founded Brattle Research Corporation, an early natural language processing software company, in 1980. His later work turned to identity and institutions: he published A Crowd of One in 2007, co-directed The Law Lab at Harvard in 2009, and co-founded the nonprofit ID3 with Sandy Pentland. As a co-founder of Bioform Labs, he helped orchestrate a December 2023 letter calling for a natural AI based on active inference. Today he is co-founder and intellectual lead of First Principles First, a research and software company that studies how AI changes institutions, markets and living systems, and he co-wrote AI Animism with his digital twin Manticus.
Timeline
-
1965
Activism and anthropology at Yale
Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, he studies at Yale, where he writes an anthropology honors thesis, "Steersman and the Stars: A Cybernetic Analysis of Myth." In March 1965, he joins the "Turnaround Tuesday" march over the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama. In 1965, he becomes president of Americans for Reappraisal of Far Eastern Policy, a campus group opposed to the Vietnam War.
-
1972–1975
Doctoral research at MIT's AI Lab
He studies cybernetics and information theory at the University of Pennsylvania's Annenberg School, then enters Penn's doctoral program in computational linguistics and artificial intelligence. From 1972 to 1975, he conducts his doctoral research at the MIT Artificial Intelligence Laboratory with Terry Winograd, and the work later appears as the book Meaning and Discourse. His Penn PhD thesis presents a computational model of discourse composition.
-
1976–1980
Founding Brattle Research
From 1976 to 1979, he is a research fellow in Harvard's Information Resources Policy Program, working with Anthony G. Oettinger on telecommunications policy and information privacy. In 1980, he founds Brattle Research Corporation, an early natural language processing software company. After its sale, he becomes Director of Intellectual Capital at Coopers & Lybrand, where he develops CLIPS, an automated semantic classification system.
-
1998–2007
Writing A Crowd of One
He edits The Biology of Business, published by Jossey-Bass in 1998. In 2007, PublicAffairs publishes his book A Crowd of One: The Future of Individual Identity.
-
2009
Co-directing Harvard's Law Lab
As a senior fellow at Harvard Law School's Berkman Center for Internet & Society, he founds the Social Physics project and helps establish Project Higgins, an initiative for user control of personal data. In 2009, he is co-director of The Law Lab at Harvard, a new center supported by a Kauffman Foundation grant that studies how social, neurological and economic mechanisms shape the role of law in cooperation and entrepreneurial innovation.
-
2014
Co-founding ID3
With Professor Sandy Pentland, he co-founds ID3, the Institute for Data Driven Design, a nonprofit that develops and field-tests legal and software trust frameworks for data-driven services. By 2014, he is its executive director and a research scientist in the MIT Media Lab's Human Dynamics Group. In 2014, he co-edits From Bitcoin to Burning Man and Beyond with David Bollier.
-
2023–2024
Bioform Labs and natural AI
As a co-founder of Bioform Labs, he brings his Coalition for Collective Intelligence Commons together at the MIT Media Lab in March 2023 to build on active inference, a framework for AI based on the principles of living things. In December 2023, the Active Inference Institute and the Boston Global Forum announce a letter he helps orchestrate, signed by 25 neuroscientists, biologists, physicists, AI researchers and others, that calls for a shift from the deep learning paradigm to a natural AI based on active inference. He discusses the letter on Denise Holt's Spatial Web AI Podcast in January 2024.
-
As of October 2026
Co-founding First Principles First
He serves on the Active Inference Institute's board from 2022 to 2025. He is co-founder and intellectual lead of First Principles First (FP1), a research and software company exploring how AI changes intelligence, institutions, markets and living systems. With his digital twin and co-author Manticus, he writes the book AI Animism: Sentient Agents and Societies.
