Neal Koblitz

Also known as Neal I. Koblitz

Neal Koblitz is a mathematician whose cryptography work centers on elliptic curves. He independently developed elliptic curve cryptography in 1985, and he and Victor Miller received the 2020 Eduard Rhein Technology Award for the invention. He took a BA at Harvard in 1969 and a PhD at Princeton in 1974 under Nick Katz, then joined the University of Washington in 1979. Prizes followed, including a 2009 prize for Excellence in the Field of Mathematics and the 2021 Levchin Prize. As of October 2026, he is a professor of mathematics at the University of Washington and an adjunct professor with the Centre for Applied Cryptographic Research at the University of Waterloo.

Timeline

  1. 1969–1974

    Harvard, then a Princeton doctorate

He receives a BA from Harvard University in 1969 and a PhD from Princeton University in 1974 under Nick Katz.

  2. 1975–1979

    An instructor at Harvard

He serves as an instructor at Harvard University from 1975 to 1979.

  3. 1985

    Elliptic curve cryptography

He independently develops elliptic curve cryptography in 1985. The core idea replaces the multiplicative group of a finite field with the group of points on an elliptic curve over a finite field.

  4. 2009

A prize for excellence in mathematics

He receives a 2009 prize for Excellence in the Field of Mathematics from an international group of security experts for his work in cryptography.

  5. 2020

    The Eduard Rhein Technology Award

He and Victor Miller win the 2020 Eduard Rhein Technology Award for the invention of elliptic-curve cryptography.

  6. 2021

    The Levchin Prize

He and Victor Miller share the 2021 Levchin Prize, which honors major innovations in cryptography.

  7. As of October 2026

    Professor at Washington and Waterloo

He joins the University of Washington in 1979 and is now a professor of mathematics there. He is also an adjunct professor with the Centre for Applied Cryptographic Research at the University of Waterloo.
