Jing Jiang
Also known as Jiang Jing
Jing Jiang is a professor whose research covers the applied side of natural language processing, from information extraction and topic modelling to question answering and the evaluation of vision-language models. After a computer science PhD at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2008, she joined the faculty of Singapore Management University. Test of Time awards at WSDM in 2020 and ECIR in 2021 recognised two of her co-authored social media papers. She was a program co-chair of EMNLP-IJCNLP 2019, was named to the Singapore 100 Women in Tech list in 2021, and was elected VP-elect of the Association for Computational Linguistics in December 2025. She is a professor in the School of Computing at the Australian National University, where her current research looks at steering large language model behaviour without heavy computation and expensive training.
Timeline
-
2007–2008
Domain adaptation and an Illinois PhD
In 2007, she and ChengXiang Zhai publish Instance Weighting for Domain Adaptation in NLP at the 45th Annual Meeting of the Association for Computational Linguistics in Prague. In 2008, she completes a computer science PhD at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a dissertation titled Domain Adaptation in Natural Language Processing, and Zhai chairs her doctoral committee. Her B.S. and M.S. degrees come from Stanford University.
-
2008
Joining Singapore Management University
After finishing her PhD in 2008, she joins the faculty of Singapore Management University. She becomes a full professor in its School of Computing and Information Systems, with research interests in natural language processing, text mining, machine learning and data mining.

2017–2020
Two SMU research fellowships
Singapore Management University gives her the Lee Kong Chian Fellowship in 2017 and the Lee Kuan Yew Fellowship for Research Excellence in 2020.
-
2019
Program co-chair of EMNLP-IJCNLP
She serves with Vincent Ng and Xiaojun Wan as a program co-chair of EMNLP-IJCNLP 2019, the Conference on Empirical Methods in Natural Language Processing held in Hong Kong in November 2019.
-
2020–2021
Two Test of Time awards
In 2020, her co-authored paper TwitterRank: Finding topic-sensitive influential Twitters, published at WSDM 2010, receives the WSDM Test of Time Award. In 2021, her co-authored paper Comparing Twitter and Traditional Media Using Topic Models receives the ECIR Test of Time Award. Both awards recognise lasting impact in social media analysis.
