Jeff Kramer

Also known as Jeffrey Kramer

Jeff Kramer is an Emeritus Professor of Distributed Computing at Imperial College London whose software engineering research reaches AI through self-managed systems, ChatGPT-based testing and Digital Humanism. He earned a BSc in electrical engineering at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in 1971 and an MSc and PhD in computing at Imperial in 1972 and 1979, joined Imperial's Department of Computing as a research associate in 1973, and became a professor in 1995. Research projects he helped lead produced CONIC and the Darwin architecture description language, which Philips used in commercialised form for television software, and in 2005 he and Jeff Magee won the ACM SIGSOFT Outstanding Research Award. From 1999 to 2004 he headed the Department of Computing, and from 2006 to 2009 he served as Dean of the Faculty of Engineering; in 2007 he and Magee proposed a three-layer model for self-managed systems. He coauthored a 2023 paper on finding failure-inducing tests with ChatGPT, contributed a chapter to the textbook Introduction to Digital Humanism in 2024, and received the IEEE Computer Society TCSE Lifetime Achievement Award in 2026.

Timeline

  1. 1971–1979

    Degrees at KwaZulu-Natal and Imperial

He earns a BSc in electrical engineering at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in 1971, an MSc in computing at Imperial College London in 1972, and a PhD in computing at Imperial in 1979.

  2. 1973–1995

    CONIC and Darwin at Imperial

He joins Imperial's Department of Computing as a research associate in 1973 and rises to lecturer in 1976, senior lecturer in 1987 and reader in 1990. He coauthors the 1983 CONIC paper on an integrated approach to distributed computer control systems, and in 1995 he introduces the Darwin architecture description language with Jeff Magee, Naranker Dulay and Susan Eisenbach. Philips uses Darwin in commercialised form for the software of its high-end television sets.

  3. 1995–2012

    Professor, department head and dean

He becomes a professor in Imperial's Department of Computing in 1995 and serves as Head of the Department from 1999 to 2004. In 1999, he and Jeff Magee publish the book Concurrency: State Models & Java Programs. He is Dean of the Faculty of Engineering from 2006 to 2009 and Senior Dean from 2009 to 2012.

  4. 2005–2011

ACM SIGSOFT awards and a fellowship

He and Jeff Magee receive the 2005 ACM SIGSOFT Outstanding Research Award for significant and lasting research contributions to software engineering. He becomes a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2008 and receives the ACM SIGSOFT Distinguished Service Award in 2011.

  5. 2007

    Three-layer model for self-managed systems

In 2007, he and Jeff Magee publish the paper Self-Managed Systems: An Architectural Challenge at Future of Software Engineering (FOSE '07). It proposes a three-layer reference model for self-managed software architectures and sets out research challenges.

  6. 2023–2024

    ChatGPT testing and digital humanism

In 2023, he coauthors the ASE 2023 paper Nuances are the Key, which combines ChatGPT with differential testing to find failure-inducing test cases. In 2024, he contributes a chapter on responsible software engineering to the textbook Introduction to Digital Humanism, which he also co-edits.

  7. 2026

    TCSE Lifetime Achievement Award

In 2026, the IEEE Computer Society's Technical Community on Software Engineering gives him its Lifetime Achievement Award for over forty-five years of contributions to software engineering across research, practice, service, leadership, and education.

  8. As of October 2026

    Emeritus professor at Imperial

He is Emeritus Professor of Distributed Computing at Imperial College London, a title he has held since 2021, and a visiting professor at the National Institute of Informatics in Tokyo. He is a member of the steering committee of the Digital Humanism Initiative.
