Jean-Paul Benzécri
Jean-Paul Benzécri was a French mathematician and statistician whose correspondence analysis processed varied data, including lexical tables derived from raw texts. He placed first in the École normale supérieure entrance examination in 1950 and the national mathematics agrégation in 1953, then submitted a differential-geometry thesis at Princeton in 1955 under Henri Cartan. At Rennes, he worked on linguistics and data analysis before moving to Paris; from 1965 to his 1992 retirement, he taught at Paris VI’s ISUP and supervised students’ data-analysis theses. He published two data-analysis volumes in 1973 and created a journal that ran from 1976 to 1997. By 1982, a third volume applied correspondence analysis to language research and musicology; he died in 2019.
Timeline
-
1950–1953
First at the ENS
A French mathematician and statistician, he places first in the École normale supérieure entrance examination in 1950 and in the national mathematics agrégation in 1953.
-
1955
A differential geometry thesis
At Princeton, he submits a Ph.D. thesis in differential geometry, Variété localement plates, in 1955 under Henri Cartan’s supervision.
-
1960–1965
Building the Rennes research program
From 1960 to 1965, he works at Rennes on linguistics and data analysis, creates the faculty’s first computing center with Coatmelec, and moves to Paris. In 1965, his student Brigitte Escofier-Cordier defends a thesis on correspondence analysis, a method he develops with codings for varied data. He applies it to lexical tables derived from raw texts, and it serves research in linguistics, sociology, history, and archaeology.
-
1965–1992
Teaching at the ISUP
From 1965 until his retirement in 1992, he teaches at the Institute of Statistics (ISUP) at Université Pierre et Marie-Curie (Paris VI). In his laboratory and associated statistics DEA program, he supervises theses on data treatment and coding in fields including agronomy, ecology, economics, and linguistics.
-
1973
Two books on data analysis
He publishes L’analyse des données in two volumes in 1973: La taxinomie and L’analyse des correspondances.
-
1976–1997
A journal for data analysis
He creates Les Cahiers de l’Analyse des Données, which runs from 1976 to 1997.
-
By 1982
Correspondence analysis in linguistics
By 1982, the third volume of Pratique de l’analyse des données applies correspondence analysis to fields that study language, including Semitic-language classification and musicology.
-
2019
Death in 2019
He dies in 2019.
