Jean-Michel Morel

Also known as J-M Morel, J-m. Morel, J. M Morel, J. M. Morel, J. Morel, J.-M. Morel

Jean-Michel Morel is a mathematician whose image-processing research links mathematical analysis with computer vision and AI. His early posts took him to Marseille-Luminy in 1978 and Paris-Dauphine in 1984; he earned a PhD in 1980 and a state doctorate in 1985, then became professor at Dauphine in 1991 and ENS Cachan in 1997. A 2005 paper with Antoni Buades and Bartomeu Coll introduced non-local means, which averages similar pixels to denoise images; Morel co-founded IPOL in 2011 as an online journal for reproducible algorithms. In 2015, he received the CNRS Innovation Medal and the CVPR Longuet-Higgins Prize, and he received an honorary doctorate from Uruguay’s Universidad de la República in 2018. He joined CityU as a chair professor in imaging science in September 2023 and was elected a Foreign Member of the Luxembourg Academy of Sciences and Arts in 2026; as of October 2026, he is Chair Professor of the Division of Industrial Data Science at Lingnan University.

Timeline

  1. 1978–1997

    From Marseille to Dauphine

He joins Marseille-Luminy as an assistant professor in 1978 and earns a PhD at Université Pierre et Marie Curie in 1980. He moves to Paris-Dauphine in 1984, earns a state doctorate at Université Pierre et Marie Curie in 1985, and becomes professor there in 1991, holding the post through 1997.

  2. 1997

    Professor at ENS Cachan

He becomes professor at ENS Cachan in 1997 and leads a team of 30 researchers on mathematical image processing.

  3. 2005–2011

    Non-local means and IPOL

He, Antoni Buades, and Bartomeu Coll publish “A non-local algorithm for image denoising” at CVPR in 2005; the method averages colors from similar pixels. In 2011, he founds IPOL, an online journal for reproducible algorithms.

  4. 2015

    Two computer vision awards

He receives the CNRS Innovation Medal in 2015 for his role in founding IPOL’s online publishing model. In 2015, the CVPR Longuet-Higgins Prize goes to “A non-local algorithm for image denoising,” his paper with Antoni Buades and Bartomeu Coll.

  5. 2018

    An honorary doctorate

He receives an honorary doctorate from the Universidad de la República in 2018 for his image-processing research.

  6. September 2023

    Chair professor at CityU

He joins CityU as a chair professor in imaging science in September 2023.

  7. 2026

    A Luxembourg academy election

His research connects mathematical foundations with image analysis, computer vision, and AI. He is elected a Foreign Member of the Luxembourg Academy of Sciences and Arts in 2026.

  8. As of October 2026

    Chair professor at Lingnan

As of October 2026, he is Chair Professor of the Division of Industrial Data Science at Lingnan University.
