James Curran

James Curran is a computational linguist whose published work includes NLP data collection, CCG parsing and large-scale language tools. By 2004, he had completed a PhD in computational lexical semantics at Edinburgh and was an ARC postdoctoral fellow at the University of Sydney, where Ask the Net gathered email answers as annotated NLP data. He coauthored work on C&C and Boxer tools in 2007 and CCG dependencies in 2010, then was named ICT Leader of the Year by the ICT Educators of NSW and the Australian Council for Computers in Education in 2014. He co-founded Grok Learning in 2016, coauthored Australia's Digital Technologies curriculum and became CEO of Grok Academy in 2020. In October 2024, he resigned as Grok Academy's founder and CEO.

Timeline

  1. By 2004

An Edinburgh PhD and Sydney postdoc

By 2004, he has completed a PhD in computational lexical semantics at the University of Edinburgh and is an ARC Postdoctoral Fellow in the University of Sydney's Language Technology Research Group. His ARC-funded Ask the Net project emails contributors simple questions and collects their answers as annotated data for NLP tasks such as named entity recognition.

  2. 2007

    C&C and Boxer NLP tools

He coauthors the 2007 paper “Linguistically Motivated Large-Scale NLP with C&C and Boxer” with Stephen Clark and Johan Bos. With Clark, he develops C&C tools that pair a wide-coverage CCG parser with taggers for large-scale language processing; Bos develops Boxer.

  3. 2010

    SCHWA: PETE and CCG dependencies

In 2010, he coauthors “SCHWA: PETE Using CCG Dependencies with the C&C Parser” with Dominick Ng, James W.D. Constable and Matthew Honnibal.

  4. 2014

    ICT Leader of the Year

In 2014, he is named ICT Leader of the Year by the ICT Educators of NSW and the Australian Council for Computers in Education.

  5. 2016

    Co-founding Grok Learning

In 2016, he co-founds Grok Learning with Tara Murphy, Nicky Ringland and Tim Dawborn; the edtech start-up offers online programming courses.

  6. 2017

    Digital Technologies curriculum

In 2017, he is Academic Director of the Australian Computing Academy and one of three authors of the Australian Curriculum: Digital Technologies.

  7. 2020

    CEO of Grok Academy

In 2020, he becomes CEO of the newly formed not-for-profit Grok Academy, a one-stop shop for teachers of Digital Technologies.

  8. October 2024

    Leaving Grok Academy
