James Cleverly

Also known as James Spencer Cleverly

James Cleverly is a Conservative politician whose main AI work came in July 2023, when he chaired the first UN Security Council session on AI risks. He has represented Braintree in Parliament since 2015 and served as Foreign Secretary from 2022 to 2023. At that session he argued that AI knows no borders and called for global governance of transformative technologies. He was Home Secretary until July 2024 and was knighted in 2025 for political and public service. In August 2026 he resigned from the shadow cabinet to run for Mayor of London.

Timeline

  1. 1989–1991

    A commission in the Army Reserve

    A leg injury curtails his Sandhurst training in 1989. In 1991 he is commissioned into the Army Reserve.

  2. 2008

    Elected to the London Assembly

    He is elected in 2008 as the London Assembly member for Bexley and Bromley. During his first years at City Hall he serves as the Mayor's Youth Ambassador.

  3. 2015–2020

    Braintree MP and party chair

    He is first elected as the Conservative MP for Braintree in May 2015. From 2019 to 2020 he serves as Chairman of the Conservative Party alongside Ben Elliot.

  4. September 2022–November 2023

    Foreign Secretary at the FCDO

    In September 2022 he takes up the post of Foreign Secretary, which he holds until November 2023.

  5. July 2023

    Chairing the first UN AI session

    In July 2023 he chairs the first UN Security Council session on AI risks. There he argues that AI knows no borders and calls for global governance of transformative technologies.

  6. November 2023–July 2024

    Home Secretary

    He serves as Home Secretary from November 2023 until July 2024.

  7. 2025

    Knighted and back on the frontbench

    He is made a Knight Bachelor for political and public service in 2025. In July 2025, Kemi Badenoch brings him back to the frontbench as shadow housing secretary.

  8. August 2026

    Running for Mayor of London

    In August 2026 he resigns from the shadow cabinet to run for Mayor of London.
