Jacqueline Le Moigne
Also known as Jacqueline J. Le Moigne, Jacqueline Le Moigne-Stewart
Jacqueline Le Moigne is a computer scientist who worked on computer vision, satellite imagery and artificial intelligence during a 35-year career at NASA, and she is now a visiting professor of computer science at the University of Miami. Trained in mathematics in Paris, she earned a computer science PhD at Pierre and Marie Curie University in 1983 and worked on the first autonomous land vehicle in the 1980s. At NASA Goddard, her research on image registration led to the 2011 book Image Registration for Remote Sensing, and in November 2018 she chaired the NASA Goddard Workshop on Artificial Intelligence. In 2024, she took charge of a new NASA program for Earth System digital twins, and the IEEE named her to its 2025 class of Fellows for satellite image registration and intelligent space systems design.
Timeline
-
1980s
From Paris to Maryland's vision lab
She earns bachelor's and master's degrees in mathematics at Pierre and Marie Curie University in Paris, followed by a computer science PhD in 1983 with a dissertation on biomedical imaging. In the 1980s, she works on the first autonomous land vehicle, and before joining NASA she is a research scientist with the Computer Vision Laboratory of the University of Maryland.
-
2009–2012
Image registration at Goddard
At NASA Goddard, she analyzes remote sensing data with a focus on image registration and becomes assistant chief for technology in the Software Engineering Division; from 2009 to 2012, she is also Goddard Center Associate for the Earth Science Technology Office's Advanced Information Systems Technology (AIST) program. Her edited book Image Registration for Remote Sensing appears from Cambridge University Press in 2011. In 2012, she receives the NASA Exceptional Service Medal and the Goddard Information Science and Technology Award.
-
2010–2017
Distributed spacecraft missions
From 2010 to 2016, she helps develop NASA's Space Technology Roadmap for Technology Area 11, which covers modeling, simulation, information technology and processing. By 2017, she leads the Goddard Distributed Spacecraft Missions Initiative and is principal investigator on projects that build system architectures and trade space analysis tools for such missions. In September 2017, she gives a Goddard colloquium on autonomy for intelligent and collaborative constellations.
-
November 2018
Goddard's AI workshop
In November 2018, she chairs the NASA Goddard Workshop on Artificial Intelligence, opening the meeting and chairing its "AI at NASA" panel. The program includes a keynote by DARPA's David Gunning on explainable artificial intelligence.
-
2024
Advanced Modeling Technology program
By May 2024, she manages the AIST program at NASA's Earth Science Technology Office, which focuses on technologies such as data analytics and artificial intelligence for Earth science. In 2024, she leads the office's Intelligent Systems Technology group and takes charge of its new Advanced Modeling Technology program, aimed at Earth System digital twins, and she selects Laura Rogers as the new AIST program manager.
-
2025
Named an IEEE Fellow
She is named to the 2025 class of IEEE Fellows for contributions to satellite image registration and intelligent space systems design.
-
Since 2025
Visiting professor at Miami
After a 35-year career at NASA, she joins the University of Miami College of Arts and Sciences in 2025 as a visiting professor in the Department of Computer Science. There she works on a digital twin of Earth with Yelena Yesha of the Frost Institute for Data Science and Computing. In March 2026, she gives a keynote on AI and technology trends at the Smart Cities MIAMI conference.
