Jacqueline Vaissière

Also known as Vaissière Jacqueline

Jacqueline Vaissière is a phonetician whose research links acoustic phonetics with speech recognition and synthesis. She studied automatic translation at Grenoble, completed a 1971 thesis on prosodic parameters for speech synthesis, and trained in acoustic phonetics at MIT. At CNET, she worked on speech recognition before becoming a professor of phonetics at Paris 3 in 1990 and directing its Phonetics and Phonology Laboratory through January 2014. In 2005, she contributed “Perception of Intonation” to The Handbook of Speech Perception; she received the CNRS Silver Medal in 2009 and became an ISCA Fellow in 2014. She is an emerita professor at Sorbonne Nouvelle and a member of the LPP team; a fifth updated edition of her book La phonétique appeared in 2025.

Timeline

  1. 1968–1975

    A speech synthesis thesis

She studies computing and automatic translation at Grenoble and completes a 1971 thesis on prosodic parameters for speech synthesis at IBM's La Gaude center. From 1971 to 1975, she trains in acoustic phonetics at MIT.

  2. 1977–1990

    Speech recognition at CNET

At CNET in Lannion, she works as a contract engineer from 1977 to 1990. She joins its speech-recognition group and investigates new services.

  3. 1990–2014

    Professor and lab director

She becomes professor of phonetics at Paris 3 in 1990 and directs the LPP, alternating with Annie Rialland, through January 2014. In 2005, she contributes the chapter “Perception of Intonation” to The Handbook of Speech Perception. Over her career, she directs more than 30 doctoral theses through their defenses.

  4. 2009

    CNRS Silver Medal

She receives the CNRS Silver Medal in 2009.

  5. 2014

    An ISCA Fellowship

ISCA elects her a Fellow in 2014 for work in clinical phonetics and contributions across phonetics, phonology, and speech engineering.

  6. Since 2025

    Emerita professor at Sorbonne Nouvelle

In 2025, she is an emerita professor at Sorbonne Nouvelle and a member of the LPP team, with interests in general and applied phonetics and prosody. A fifth updated edition of La phonétique appears in 2025.
