Huanhuan Chen
Also known as 陈欢欢
Huanhuan Chen is a machine learning researcher and a professor in the School of Computer Science and Technology at the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), with work spanning Bayesian classification, neural network ensembles and fault diagnosis. After a 2004 bachelor's degree at USTC, he earned a computer science PhD at the University of Birmingham in 2008, and his thesis on diversity and regularization in neural network ensembles won the 2011 IEEE Computational Intelligence Society Outstanding PhD Dissertation Award. With Peter Tino and Xin Yao, he introduced probabilistic classification vector machines in 2009, a sparse Bayesian method that won the Outstanding 2009 Paper Award of IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks. The International Neural Network Society gave him its Young Investigator Award in 2015, and IEEE named him a Fellow in its class of 2025 for contributions to statistical and explainable machine learning.
Timeline
-
2004–2008
From USTC to Birmingham
He earns a B.Sc. at USTC in Hefei in 2004. Supported by a Dorothy Hodgkin Postgraduate Award, he completes a PhD in computer science at the University of Birmingham in 2008.
-
2008–2012
Posts at Birmingham and Leeds
From 2008 to 2012, he works at the University of Birmingham and then at the University of Leeds in the UK.
-
2009–2012
Probabilistic classification vector machines
In June 2009, he publishes "Probabilistic Classification Vector Machines" with Peter Tino and Xin Yao in IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks. The sparse learning algorithm for Bayesian classification places a signed and truncated Gaussian prior on every weight, with the sign set by the class label. The paper wins the journal's Outstanding 2009 Paper Award, presented in 2012.
-
2011
IEEE CIS dissertation award
His PhD thesis, "Diversity and Regularization in Neural Network Ensembles", receives the 2011 IEEE Computational Intelligence Society Outstanding PhD Dissertation Award as its only winner.
-
2013–2015
Learning in the model space
From 2013 to 2015, as a principal investigator at USTC, he leads a Royal Society and NSFC exchange project on cognitive fault diagnosis with Anthony G. Cohn of the University of Leeds. In 2014, he publishes "Learning in the model space for cognitive fault diagnosis" with Peter Tino, Ali Rodan and Xin Yao; the framework fits a series of models to signal segments chosen with a sliding window and tells faulty models apart from healthy ones.
-
July 2015
An INNS Young Investigator Award
In July 2015, at the International Joint Conference on Neural Networks in Ireland, he receives the International Neural Network Society (INNS) Young Investigator Award for his contributions to neural networks research. He is the only recipient of the award in 2015.
-
2025
Named an IEEE Fellow
He joins the IEEE Fellow class of 2025, evaluated by the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society, for contributions to theory and applications of statistical and explainable machine learning.
-
As of October 2026
Professor at USTC
He is a professor in the School of Computer Science and Technology at USTC in Hefei and has served as an associate editor of IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks and Learning Systems since 2016. Recent papers from his group include a dual-module framework for counterfactual estimation over time at ICML 2024 and differentiable structure learning with partial orders at NeurIPS 2024.
