Heng Huang
Also known as Heng Yu Huang
Heng Huang is a computer scientist whose research spans machine learning, deep-learning optimization, biomedical data science and AI for environmental forecasting. He earned a bachelor's degree in automation at Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 1997, a master's there in 2001 and a computer science PhD at Dartmouth in 2006, then held faculty posts at UTA and Pitt. In 2018, he coauthored a paper on decoupled parallel backpropagation that removes backward locking, and led an NSF project on asynchronous distributed learning for multi-site brain-data mining. He became an AIMBE Fellow in 2020, and Maryland named him its inaugural Brendan Iribe Endowed Professor in 2022 with a planned early-2023 start; by October 2023, he held the post and was scheduled to speak on large-scale machine-learning model computing and compression. In 2025, he led an NSF project to develop AI methods for wildland-fire detection and forecasting; as of October 2026, he is the Brendan Iribe Endowed Professor at Maryland and directs the Applied AI Center at UM-IHC.
