Haoran Xie
Also known as 謝浩然
Haoran Xie is a Lingnan AI researcher whose work spans generative models, natural language processing and AI in education. He co-authored a topic-related sentiment paper and Least Squares Generative Adversarial Networks in 2017, then helped develop an AI vocabulary-learning system at Lingnan in 2022. The system won two iCAN awards in 2022, and Stanford included him in its World’s Top 2% Scientists list in 2025. He was elected to the Hong Kong Academy of Engineering Young Member Section in 2026. He studied software engineering, computer science and digital learning at Beijing University of Technology, City University of Hong Kong and the University of Bristol; as of October 2026, he is Lingnan’s Professor and Person-in-Charge of Artificial Intelligence, Associate Dean of Data Science, and Director of its data science institute.

Timeline
-
2017
Cross-domain sentiment paper
In 2017, he co-authors “Cross-Domain Sentiment Classification via Topic-Related TrAdaBoost” while affiliated with The Education University of Hong Kong. The paper combines topic distributions with TrAdaBoost for sentiment classification across domains.
-
2017
Least Squares GANs
He co-authors Least Squares Generative Adversarial Networks for ICCV 2017. The model uses least-squares loss for its discriminator and yields more stable training and higher-quality images in the paper’s experiments.
-
2022
A vocabulary-learning system
In 2022, he is an Associate Professor in Lingnan’s Department of Computing and Decision Sciences. He collaborates with Man-leung Wong and Di Zou of The Education University of Hong Kong on an AI-based personalised vocabulary-learning prototype that recommends learning paths and tasks for students.
-
2022
Two iCAN awards
In 2022, the system wins the Gold Medal and International Special Award at the 7th International Invention Innovation Competition in Canada (iCAN).
-
2025
Stanford’s Top 2% list
In 2025, Stanford includes him in its World’s Top 2% Scientists list.
-
2026
HKAE Young Member
In 2026, he is elected to the Hong Kong Academy of Engineering Young Member Section.
-
By 2026
Degrees from three universities
By 2026, he holds a BEng in software engineering from Beijing University of Technology, an MSc and PhD in computer science from City University of Hong Kong, and an EdD in digital learning from the University of Bristol.
-
As of October 2026
AI professor at Lingnan
As of October 2026, he is Professor and Person-in-Charge of Lingnan University’s Division of Artificial Intelligence, Associate Dean of the School of Data Science, and Director of the LEO Dr David P. Chan Institute of Data Science.
