Hai-Tao Zheng
Also known as Haitao Zheng, Zheng Haitao, 郑海涛
Hai-Tao Zheng is an associate professor at Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School whose research covers pre-trained large models, knowledge graphs and semantic mining. After degrees at Sun Yat-sen University and a 2009 PhD in medical informatics at Seoul National University, they coauthored ShuffleNet V2 in 2018, a paper that won a 2019 VALSE outstanding student paper award. With Ning Ding, Zhiyuan Liu and other coauthors, they contributed to the Few-NERD dataset in 2021, the OpenPrompt toolkit in 2022 and the delta-tuning analysis in Nature Machine Intelligence in 2023. They won the 2023 Shenzhen Artificial Intelligence Natural Science Award and were elected an IET Fellow in 2026. At the school, they are deputy director of the Institute of Artificial Intelligence Science and Technology.
Timeline
-
1997–2009
Degrees at Sun Yat-sen and Seoul
Zheng studies computer software at Sun Yat-sen University, earning a bachelor's degree in 2001 and a master's degree in computer software and theory in 2004. After a stint as a lecturer at South China Agricultural University from 2005 to 2006, they complete a PhD in medical informatics at Seoul National University in 2009. In 2009, they also publish a text document clustering paper in Information Sciences with Bo-Yeong Kang and Hong-Gee Kim.
-
2018–2019
ShuffleNet V2 at ECCV
In 2018, they coauthor ShuffleNet V2 with Ningning Ma, Xiangyu Zhang and Jian Sun for the European Conference on Computer Vision. The paper proposes practical guidelines for efficient network design and a new architecture that comprehensive experiments show to be state-of-the-art in both speed and accuracy. It wins the 2019 VALSE Outstanding Student Paper of the Year Award.
-
2021–2022
Few-NERD and OpenPrompt
In 2021, they coauthor Few-NERD with Ning Ding, Zhiyuan Liu and others, a human-annotated few-shot named entity recognition dataset with 8 coarse-grained and 66 fine-grained entity types. In 2022, they coauthor OpenPrompt, a toolkit for prompt-learning over pre-trained language models, which wins the ACL 2022 best system demonstration paper award.
-
2023
Delta tuning for language models
In March 2023, Nature Machine Intelligence publishes "Parameter-efficient fine-tuning of large-scale pre-trained language models", an analysis of delta-tuning, with Zheng among its authors. The paper proposes a unified categorization of methods that adapt a model by changing a small share of its parameters, and tests them on over 100 natural language processing tasks. A cover article, it earns a 2023 World Artificial Intelligence Conference youth outstanding paper award and a 2023 China Computing Conference best academic paper award.
-
2023
A Shenzhen AI science prize
In 2023, they receive the Shenzhen Artificial Intelligence Natural Science Award as first contributor, for a project on knowledge representation and mining based on prompt learning. They are also selected as one of the top 100 influential scholars of ECCV in 2023. They also serve as area chair for NeurIPS 2023 and for AAAI 2023.
-
2024–2026
IEEE Senior Member to IET Fellow
They become an IEEE Senior Member in March 2024 and are selected for Guangdong Province's special support program for young top talent in 2025. In 2026, they are elected a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET).
-
2025
KuaiMod for content moderation
In 2025, they coauthor "VLM as Policy" with Xingyu Lu, Kun Gai and others, published at ACM SIGKDD. The paper annotates a short-video content moderation benchmark and proposes KuaiMod, which uses a large vision language model with chain-of-thought reasoning; its deployment reduces the user reporting rate by 20%. It receives an ACM SIGKDD 2025 best paper honorable mention.
-
As of October 2026
Associate professor at Tsinghua SIGS
They are an associate professor and PhD supervisor at Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School, and deputy director of its Institute of Artificial Intelligence Science and Technology and of its Knowledge Engineering Research Center. Their research covers pre-trained large models, knowledge graphs and semantic mining, and their representative results include the jointly developed open-source language model ChatGLM-6B. They lead a National Natural Science Foundation of China project on multimodal knowledge graph construction under low-resource conditions, running from 2023 to 2026.
