Giuseppe Caire
Giuseppe Caire is a professor of electrical engineering at TU Berlin, where he leads the Communications and Information Theory chair and works on information theory, wireless systems and machine learning for communication networks. Born in Turin in 1965, he studied at the Politecnico di Torino and Princeton, then taught at Eurecom from 1998 to 2005 and at the University of Southern California from 2005 to 2016. A Humboldt Professorship brought him to Berlin in 2014; in 2019 he coauthored RadioUNet, a convolutional neural network that estimates radio pathloss in cities, and in 2020 he became a principal scientist at the Berlin Institute for the Foundations of Learning and Data (BIFOLD). His 2021 Leibniz Prize recognized the theory behind BICM, a coded modulation method now standard in wireless communication, along with new results on distributed caching. In November 2025, his team won a €10 million ERC Synergy Grant to make wireless communication more energy-efficient.
Timeline
-
1965–1995
Turin, Princeton and ESTEC
Born in Turin, Italy, in 1965, he earns a B.Sc. in electrical engineering at the Politecnico di Torino in 1990, an M.Sc. at Princeton University in 1992 and a Ph.D. at the Politecnico di Torino in 1994. From 1994 to 1995, he is a postdoctoral research fellow at the European Space Agency's ESTEC in Noordwijk, Netherlands.
-
1995–2005
Professor at Eurecom
He becomes an assistant professor in telecommunications at the Politecnico di Torino in 1995 and an associate professor at the University of Parma in 1997. From 1998 to 2005, he is a professor in the Department of Mobile Communications at the Eurecom Institute in Sophia Antipolis, France.
-
2005–2016
Professor at USC Viterbi
From 2005 to 2016, he is a professor at the University of Southern California's Viterbi School of Engineering. He becomes an IEEE Fellow in 2005 and serves as president of the IEEE Information Theory Society in 2011.
-
2014–2018
Humboldt Professor at TU Berlin
In April 2014, he receives an Alexander von Humboldt Professorship and takes charge of the Communications and Information Theory chair (CommIT) at TU Berlin. There he sets up a laboratory that combines theory and practice, and he receives an ERC Advanced Grant in 2018.
-
2019–2024
Deep learning for radio maps
In 2019, he coauthors RadioUNet with Ron Levie, Çağkan Yapar and Gitta Kutyniok; the convolutional neural network learns from simulation data to estimate radio pathloss in urban environments. He becomes a principal scientist at the Berlin Institute for the Foundations of Learning and Data (BIFOLD) in 2020. In 2024, with Fabian Jaensch and Begüm Demir, he predicts path loss radio maps from aerial images using convolutional neural networks.
-
2021–2024
Leibniz Prize and Leopoldina
He receives the 2021 Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize, announced by the German Research Foundation (DFG) in December 2020, for the theory behind BICM, a coded modulation method now standard in wireless communication, and for new results on distributed caching. The DFG also credits him with co-founding SpaceMUX, a Silicon Valley start-up for wireless networks in companies. In 2024, he is elected to the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina.
-
November 2025
An ERC Synergy Grant
In November 2025, an international team he leads with Andrea Alù, Marco di Renzo and Christoph Studer wins a €10 million ERC Synergy Grant. Their six-year project, Waves, Physics, Information, and Computation (WePhICom), studies how to process electromagnetic waves for energy-efficient wireless communication.
-
As of October 2026
Head of CommIT at TU Berlin
He is a full professor of electrical engineering at TU Berlin, where he leads the Communications and Information Theory chair, and a BIFOLD Fellow. His research interests include information theory, channel coding, coded caching, wireless communication systems and machine learning for communication networks.
