Gitta Kutyniok
Gitta Kutyniok is an applied mathematician whose research spans harmonic analysis and the mathematical foundations of artificial intelligence. She studied mathematics and computer science at Paderborn, completed a doctorate in time-frequency analysis, and held visiting positions in the United States before professorships at Osnabrück and TU Berlin. Her shearlet research supported image analysis and data compression; an LMU lecture in 2021 discussed mathematical approaches to explaining AI decisions, and her 2022 survey focused on deep neural networks. SIAM named her a Fellow in 2019, and IEEE named her a Fellow in 2024. As of October 2026, she holds LMU’s Chair for Mathematical Foundations of Artificial Intelligence and serves as vice president of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities.

Timeline
-
1996–2000
A mathematics education
Educated in Detmold, she earns a mathematics and computer science diploma at Paderborn in 1996 and completes a doctorate in time-frequency analysis there in 2000.
-
2001–2008
Research posts in the United States
From 2001 to 2008, she holds visiting positions at Princeton, Stanford, Yale, Georgia Institute of Technology, and Washington University in St. Louis. In 2006, she completes a mathematics Habilitation at Giessen.
-
2007
The von Kaven Prize
The DFG selects her for the von Kaven Prize in 2007 for work in applied harmonic analysis. She develops shearlets that reveal image geometry and support data analysis and image compression.
-
2008–2020
Professorships in Osnabrück and Berlin
She becomes a full professor of mathematics at Osnabrück in 2008 and joins TU Berlin as an Einstein Professor in 2011, where she holds the chair through 2020.
-
2019–2024
SIAM and IEEE Fellowships
She becomes a SIAM Fellow in 2019 and an IEEE Fellow in 2024.
-
2020–2022
Mathematics for explainable AI
She moves to LMU in October 2020 to hold its Bavarian AI Chair for Mathematical Foundations of Artificial Intelligence. At an LMU lecture in 2021, she discusses mathematical methods to explain AI decisions; her 2022 ICM survey focuses on deep neural networks.
-
2025
Working on the EU AI Act
In 2025, she and her LMU team assist companies as they address the EU AI Act and develop practical compliance solutions.
-
Since October 2026
AI chair and BBAW vice president
As of October 2026, she holds LMU’s Chair for Mathematical Foundations of Artificial Intelligence and serves as vice president of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities.
