Gerd Maderlechner

Gerd Maderlechner is a computer scientist whose pattern-recognition work helped machines interpret images, maps, and documents. He coauthored work on graph and Hough methods, scanned-map conversion, document sorting, and attention-based layout analysis. The IAPR named him a Fellow in 1994 for contributions to pattern recognition, interpretation technologies, their applications, and service to the association. In 2006, he coauthored work on finding PDF captions for semantic image annotation.

Timeline

  1. 1984–1988

    Graph and Hough methods

    With Oskar Bartenstein, he publishes a paper on discriminating graphs for fault-tolerant pattern recognition in 1984. In 1988, he and Ulrich Eckhardt publish work on a projected Hough transform for picture processing.

  2. 1994

    Fellowship and map analysis

    The IAPR names him a Fellow in 1994 for contributions to pattern recognition, interpretation technologies, their applications, and service to the association. With Helmut Mayer, he presents work on converting scanned maps into geographic information for GIS in 1994.

  3. 1996

    IDA and a Tokyo committee

    He coauthors IDA, a system for automated document sorting, indexing, and classification, in 1996. In November 1996, he serves as a Siemens committee member for the 5th IAPR Workshop on Machine Vision Applications in Tokyo.

  4. 1997

    Classifying office documents

    With Peter Suda and Thomas Brückner, he publishes “Classification of documents by form and content” in 1997.

  5. 2000

    Attention-based document layout

    With Angela Schreyer and Peter Suda, he describes attention-based layout segmentation for document images in 2000. The approach uses principles of human visual perception and identifies regions of interest.

  6. 2003

    Recognizing invalidation lines

    With Peter Suda, he publishes “Extraction of valid data sets in registers using recognition of invalidation lines” in 2003.

  7. 2006

    Finding captions in PDFs

    In 2006, he, Jirí Panyr, and Peter Suda publish work on finding captions in PDF documents for semantic image annotation.
