Gergely Neu
Gergely Neu is a machine learning theorist working on reinforcement learning, bandit problems and online optimization. His 2013 doctorate studied online learning in changing Markov decision processes. After postdoctoral work at Inria Lille, he joined Pompeu Fabra in 2015 and became a research assistant professor in 2018. He received an ERC Starting Grant, then became an ICREA research professor and received an ERC Consolidator Grant in 2026. He emphasizes algorithms with practical implementations and formal performance guarantees.

Timeline
-
2008–2013
Learn to make sequential decisions
Neu’s electrical engineering master’s thesis studied inverse reinforcement learning. His 2013 computer science doctorate at Budapest University of Technology and Economics studied online learning in non-stationary Markov decision processes, where the decision environment can change.
-
2013–2018
Research in Lille and Barcelona
He conducted postdoctoral work with Inria’s SequeL team from 2013 to 2015. He then joined Pompeu Fabra’s AI group as a postdoctoral researcher and became a research assistant professor in October 2018.
-
2020
Support for reinforcement learning theory
Neu received an ERC Starting Grant in 2020. His research focuses on reinforcement learning theory, bandit problems and online optimization, with emphasis on both statistical and computational guarantees.
-
2026
A new research appointment
As of February 2026, Neu was an ICREA research professor in Pompeu Fabra’s economics and business department and had received an ERC Consolidator Grant. He said he would retain ties to the AI group.
