Gerard Milburn
Also known as Gerard J Milburn, G J Milburn, G Milburn, G. J. MILBURN, G. J. Milburn, G. Milburn
Gerard Milburn is a quantum physicist whose research connects artificial intelligence with quantum systems. He directed Australian quantum research centres and coauthored a 2001 scheme for efficient quantum computing with linear optics. His later work studies optical agents and quantum learning machines. Since 2024, he is a Quantum Fellow at the UK's National Quantum Computing Centre and an Emeritus Professor at the University of Queensland.
Timeline
-
1980–1982
Physics degrees at Griffith and Waikato
He earns a BSc (Hons) in physics at Griffith University in 1980 and completes a PhD under Daniel Frank Walls at the University of Waikato in 1982.
-
1983–1985
Postdoc and Royal Society Fellow
He works as a postdoctoral research assistant in the Department of Physics at Imperial College in London from 1983 to 1984. From October 1984 to May 1985, he holds a Royal Society Research Fellowship there.
-
1997–2000
UQ's Centre for Laser Science
His academic career in Australia begins at the Australian National University and continues at the University of Queensland. From 1997 to 2000, he directs UQ's Centre for Laser Science.
-
2000–2010
Deputy Director, Quantum Computer Technology
From 2000 to 2010, he serves as Deputy Director of the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Quantum Computer Technology. In 2001, he coauthors a Nature paper showing that beam splitters, phase shifters, single-photon sources and photo-detectors can support efficient quantum computing.
-
2011–2017
Director of Engineered Quantum Systems
He serves as Director and Chief Investigator of the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Engineered Quantum Systems from 2011 to 2017.
-
2017
A Royal Society Fellowship
In 2017, he becomes a Fellow of the Royal Society.
-
2020–2023
Quantum agents and learning machines
In 2020, he coauthors a paper about an optical agent that uses light to probe and learn about its environment. With Sahar Basiri-Esfahani, he examines the physics and energy costs of learning and presents a single-photon quantum-kernel evaluation in 2022. In 2023, he publishes Quantum learning machines, which describes a quantum optical perceptron that dissipates energy as spontaneous emission.
-
Since 2024
Quantum Fellow at NQCC
He joins the UK's National Quantum Computing Centre in 2024 as its first Quantum Fellow. In 2025, he speaks at NQCC's Quantum Information event as a Quantum Fellow and coauthors the chapter Photonic quantum computing with Jacquiline Romero. In September 2026, he is an NQCC Quantum Fellow and an Emeritus Professor in the University of Queensland's School of Mathematics and Physics.
