Gérard Huet
Gérard Huet is a computer scientist whose work covers higher-order logic, proof assistants, and computational linguistics. He earned engineering and computer science degrees in France and the United States, joined IRIA in 1972, and helped develop Caml at INRIA. With Thierry Coquand, he helped create the Calculus of Constructions and Coq’s first prototypes; from 2000, he developed Sanskrit Heritage tools for language analysis. The French Academy elected him in 2002; he received the EATCS Award in 2009 and the Inria Grand Prix in 2011, and the initial Coq team received the 2013 ACM Software System Award. Timeline
-
1969–1982
Mentor, Formel, and Caml
He earns an engineer diploma at Ecole Nationale Supérieure de l’Aéronautique et de l’Espace and a Maîtrise d’Informatique at the University of Paris in 1969, then an MS in 1970; his 1972 PhD in computer science at Case Western Reserve addresses higher-order logic and proposes a unification algorithm. He joins IRIA as a researcher in 1972 and works with Gilles Kahn on the Mentor Structured Editor from 1974 to 1978. In 1982, he starts the Formel project at INRIA with Guy Cousineau, and their work leads to Caml.

1984–1998
The Coq proof assistant
In 1984, he and Thierry Coquand implement the Calculus of Constructions at INRIA-Rocquencourt, which becomes the logical basis of Coq. At INRIA, he develops Coq’s first prototypes and leads its group until 1998.
-
1996–2003
Sanskrit Heritage and Zen
In 1996, he begins the Sanskrit Heritage dictionary as a personal Sanskrit-French project. From 2000, he focuses on computational linguistics and develops Zen tools for Sanskrit analysis. The site provides public web services from 2003 for dictionary search, segmentation, tagging, and parsing.
-
2002
Member of the French Academy
The Academy elects him as a corresponding member in March 1990 and as a member in November 2002.
