Garrett Grolemund

Also known as Garret Grolemund

Garrett Grolemund develops R software and teaches people to use it for data analysis, machine learning, and AI-assisted workflows. He coauthored lubridate, wrote Hands-On Programming with R, and coauthored R for Data Science. In 2020, he helped create a supervised machine learning workshop with tidymodels, and in May 2025 he wrote about Posit AI tools with Snowflake. He joined RStudio in 2012, served as Posit's Director of Developer Relations in 2024, and as of October 2026 is Director of Learning at Posit.

  1. 2011

    A date-time package for R

    In 2011, he coauthors the Journal of Statistical Software article “Dates and Times Made Easy with lubridate” with Hadley Wickham. The article presents lubridate as an R package for date-time work and introduces a framework for arithmetic with date-times.

  2. 2012

    A Rice PhD and RStudio

    In August 2012, he joins RStudio with Hadley Wickham and Winston Chang. He completes a Ph.D. in statistics at Rice's Department of Statistics in December 2012 under thesis advisor Hadley Wickham, with a thesis titled “Tools and Theory for Improving Data Analysis.”

  3. 2014

    Hands-On Programming with R

    In July 2014, he publishes Hands-On Programming with R, a book that teaches non-programmers how to program in R through hands-on examples.

  4. 2017

    R for Data Science

    He coauthors R for Data Science with Hadley Wickham; O'Reilly publishes the book in 2017 as a guide to importing, wrangling, exploring, and modeling data and communicating results.

  5. 2020

    Teaching machine learning with tidymodels

    In 2020, he and a colleague design an introductory workshop in supervised machine learning with tidymodels. Attendees learn to train and assess predictive models with common algorithms and use feature engineering to improve accuracy.

  6. January 2024

    Developer relations at Posit

    In January 2024, he is Director of Developer Relations at Posit and presents a Shiny app styling workshop that uses bslib for layouts and theme changes.

  7. May 2025

    AI tools with Snowflake

    In May 2025, he writes about Posit's open-source AI tools gander, chores, chatlas, and querychat connecting with Snowflake Cortex to offer context-aware AI assistance inside the IDE.

    Director of Learning at Posit

    He is Director of Learning at Posit. For the March 2026 AACI conference, he is a co-facilitator of a workshop on using R and Shiny to build interactive apps with chat-based AI data exploration for cancer researchers. In September 2026, he presents a R/Pharma workshop on human-in-the-loop AI analysis with Posit Assistant in Positron.
