Garrett Bingham

Also known as Garrett Joseph Bingham

Garrett Bingham is a senior research scientist at Google DeepMind whose work spans neural-network design and mathematical reasoning. At UT Austin, he researched evolutionary activation functions, completed a computer science PhD, and introduced AutoInit for neural-network weight initialization. He helped lead DeepMind’s natural-language reasoning system for the 2024 IMO, and his dissertation received a 2024 ACM SIGEVO Best Dissertation Award honorable mention. AlphaProof and AlphaGeometry 2 reached silver-medal standard in 2024, and he contributed to the 2025 IMO team whose Gemini Deep Think model reached gold-medal level. As of October 2026, he works on advanced reasoning and coauthors work on Aletheia, a Gemini Deep Think math research agent.

Timeline

  1. 2020

    Evolutionary activation functions

At UT Austin, he researches neural-network activation functions with William Macke under Professor Risto Miikkulainen. Their evolutionary-search paper is accepted to the Genetic and Evolutionary Computation Conference (GECCO) in 2020 and uses selection and mutation to discover new functions.

  2. 2023

    A PhD and AutoInit

He completes a computer science PhD at UT Austin in 2023. Under Professor Risto Miikkulainen, he presents AutoInit, a method that automatically initializes neural-network weights and keeps signals from becoming too large or too small.

  3. 2024

    SIGEVO dissertation mention

His dissertation on evolutionary methods for activation-function discovery and neural-network weight initialization earns an honorable mention in the ACM SIGEVO Best Dissertation Award in 2024.

  4. 2024

    Natural-language reasoning at IMO

He co-leads development of DeepMind’s natural-language reasoning system for the 2024 International Mathematical Olympiad. Separately, AlphaProof and AlphaGeometry 2 solve four of six problems and reach the silver-medal standard.

  5. 2025

    Gemini Deep Think reaches gold

He is among the leads and key contributors to the IMO 2025 team. An advanced Gemini Deep Think version solves five of six problems perfectly and scores 35 points, reaching gold-medal level.

  6. As of October 2026

Senior research scientist at Google DeepMind

In 2026, he coauthors “Towards Autonomous Mathematics Research,” work on Aletheia, a math research agent powered by Gemini Deep Think that generates, verifies, and revises solutions. He is a senior research scientist at Google DeepMind, focused on advanced reasoning.
