Florentina Bunea
Florentina Bunea is a statistician whose research spans machine-learning theory, high-dimensional inference and evaluation of AI outputs. She earned degrees in Bucharest, taught in Romania and at Florida State, and joined Cornell's statistics faculty in 2011. She became an IMS Fellow in 2017, received Cornell's Bowers Research Excellence Award in 2024, and received the IMS Medallion Award in 2025. As of October 2026, she is a professor of statistics and data science at Cornell, where she studies AI output evaluation.

Timeline
-
1989–2000
Degrees and early teaching
She earns bachelor's and master's degrees at the University of Bucharest in 1989 and 1991. She teaches at Politehnica University of Bucharest as an assistant professor from 1991 to 1995, then completes a statistics Ph.D. at the University of Washington in 2000.
-
2000–2011
Florida State and sparse estimation
At Florida State, she serves as an assistant and associate professor of statistics from 2000 to 2011. In the early 2000s, she and her collaborators introduce sparsity adaptive estimation, a principle for finding meaningful signals in large data sets.

2011
Joining Cornell's statistics faculty
In 2011, she joins Cornell's statistical science faculty as a professor. Her research includes machine-learning theory, dimension reduction, model selection and inference in high-dimensional matrix models.
-
2017
An IMS fellowship
In 2017, she is named as an Institute of Mathematical Statistics Fellow at the Joint Statistical Meetings in Baltimore.
-
2024
A Bowers research award
Cornell recognizes her with the 2024 Ann S. Bowers Research Excellence Award for key research contributions.
-
2025
The IMS Medallion Award
In 2025, she receives the Institute of Mathematical Statistics Medallion Award for contributions to uncertainty quantification for identifiable latent structures in complex systems.
-
