Researcher

Favyen Bastani

Favyen Bastani is a computer scientist whose work spans computer vision, video analytics, and multimodal AI. He coauthors early research on flexible routes from GPS data, then helps develop RoadTracer for aerial road mapping and video analytics systems at MIT. His later work includes SatlasPretrain for remote sensing, Molmo and PixMo for vision-language models, and OlmoEarth models for Earth observation. As of October 2026, he is an applied research scientist at Ai2.

Timeline

  1. 2011

    Routes from GPS trajectories

In 2011, he coauthors “A Greener Transportation Mode,” a paper on flexible-route discovery from GPS trajectories.

  2. 2016

    A Golden Beaver Award

MIT names him a winner of the 2016 individual Golden Beaver Award. The award recognizes students who create positive change in their groups and campus environment.

  3. 2018

    RoadTracer maps aerial roads

He coauthors RoadTracer in 2018, a method that uses CNN-guided iterative search to build road-network maps from aerial images.

  4. 2020–2022

    Systems for video analysis

At MIT, he works with Sam Madden in the Data Systems research group on video analytics. He coauthors Vaas in 2020, an interactive system for large video datasets, and OTIF in 2022, a paper on efficient tracker pre-processing.

  5. 2023

    SatlasPretrain for remote sensing

In 2023, he coauthors SatlasPretrain, an ICCV paper introducing a large-scale dataset for remote-sensing image understanding using Sentinel-2 and NAIP images.

  6. 2024

    Molmo and PixMo

In 2024, he coauthors Molmo, an open family of vision-language models, and PixMo, a set of detailed image-captioning, image-question-answering, and 2D pointing datasets.

  7. 2025–2026

    Earth observation models

In 2025, he coauthors a study that uses a pretrained multimodal Earth-observation model to create fuel-moisture maps for wildfire risk. In 2026, he coauthors a report on OlmoEarth v1.2 that cuts training and inference compute while maintaining model performance. In April 2026, he coauthors Ai2's announcement of OlmoEarth embedding exports.

  8. As of October 2026

    Research scientist at Ai2

As of October 2026, he is an applied research scientist at the Allen Institute for AI (Ai2).
